Hi

i am planning my first trip to yosemite valley next year.
we are looking at beeing there for 3 weeks, from mid april and through
the first week of may.

how will the conditions normally be at that time of year ?
will there be a lot of snow, that creates problems, for example the walk off, from the top of el cap ? access to mount watkins and half dome base ?
other things to consider at that time of year ?

all answers are greatly appreciated

No hay problema. You're playing in the great outdoors so anything is possible but those dates are usually pretty sweet.

Base of Half Dome could be snowy.....everyone hopes so, there has been a four year drought.

Bring your skis. You can climb in the Valley and ski in Tuolumne Meadows & the High Sierra.

Spring weather, can get some rain and a freak snowstorm, but usually a great time to be there, before the extreme crowds and heat hit.

Temps will be perfect. Might get some rain storms. Mosquitoes will start hatching in May.

The base of Half Dome could be sketchy if you're getting a really early start and the snow is frozen. You could maybe bring an axe and toss it down once you get on the wall, or plan on doing it towards the end of your trip. Snow shouldn't be an issue on the east ledges, and getting out to Liberty Cap should be doable. The snow pack can vary quite a lot from year to year so there's really no telling. Check the webcams just before your trip to get an idea of what to expect. Generally it's the narrow gullies like the Gunsight or the Sentinel descent that are problematic in the spring.

Here's what a typical early-mid April looks like
