Frank Sinatra, sure was mobbed-up, so it is said, but the guy was a real man and personified a certain class of men.
http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=frank+sinatra+my+way&qpvt=Frank+SInatra+My+Way&FORM=VDRE#view=detail&mid=A77DFCB0129F91E69AAEA77DFCB0129F91E69AAE
I may come up with better examples, and even female samples....

"For what is a man, what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught. To say the things he truly feels; and not the words of one who kneels. The record shows, I took the blows, and did it 'my way'."

Wilfrid is as manly as any other old school boy, you will find...for a poet and schoolmaster, that is.

A bedwetter who acted tough and sang like a bird for gangsters is an old school role model.
This is what you need to exit your existentialist closet, Steve:
I wonder what you would HONESTLY say about Obama and Al Gore?
At least Frank preached personal independence and ACCOUNTABILITY. And tell me if the "gangstes" that Frank worked for are any different than the ones working for the current gov't? Really.
Is the game any different? Who's worse? Who has more integrity and values?

Clint Eastwood has more children by different women than Eazy E. Not sure that's a role model, although he plays a crusty old honorable dude in his movies, lol. What about John Wayne playing Genghis Khan or a Green Beret?

It'd be funny if Jim actually put forth one of his role models, other than the obvious Dad or whatever.
Winston Churchill was another of mine from early on, even when i leaned liberal. The guy was just unafraid and outspoken.
I have a 1956 (weird?) version on the "A History Of The English Speaking Peoples" written by Sir Winston Churchill.
The "weird" part is he describes the exact same 'Mohammedan' problems he saw back then. He was right. He saw it then. We ignore the problem....

Any other detractor can feel free to contribute their thoughts.
I was gonna throw Ghandhi out there, but thought twice about it. Patton was more righteous.

A great American role model:
Eugene V. Debs!
He fought for the common man against The Man his whole life. Refused to ride in Pullman cars. Even when The Man jailed him, he didn't back down from his socialist principles.
Malcolm X is another great role model. A very intelligent man, he was not afraid to change his thinking and philosophy as his life progressed. We could all learn from Malcolm X.

Good one, Gary!
But MLK and Malcolm X might have issues with today's "progressive" party. Who oppressed the black man more? Which party?
Who celebrates diversity and personal liberty? Which party?

Who celebrates diversity and personal liberty? Which party?
The Peace and Freedom Party, baby!
http://www.peaceandfreedom.org/home/
The Peace and Freedom Party is an open, multi-tendency, movement-oriented socialist party. We are united in our common commitment to socialism, democracy, feminism and unionism and our common opposition to capitalism, imperialism, racism, sexism and elitism.

Oh Steve,
You are coy... As for role models, that assumes you gleefully accept a role and someone to point you in the right direction. If it means personal prosperity, well, who could argue ?
If it means you're the dumb son of a bitch who dies for his country first, who's the wiser ?
I may be coy, traditional, and a dumb SOB, but I do have values. Weird that you refuse to mention people you would praise, or hold in higher esteem.
Weird. Golda Meier, Maggie Thatcher, and Condie Rice are women who rock in my book. Those 3 chix had more balls than most men.....
