Mahalo friends. My name is Dexter Nelson, I'm 24 and I recently moved to Chico California (up from the central coast). Gonna be real. I hate it here, not completely sure why (just my opinion). Alas I'm stuck here for the time being and I've been searching for a new climbing partner. aaaannnddd people in NorCal...well, are different when it comes to climbing...just different.
Got a double rack, couple rope options, the whatnots, and a Fri-Mon 4 day weekend Every Week. Been getting into some lowkey ice climbing in anticipation for the winter, and trying to get back into shape after a string of bad luck: cherry on top, didn't climb this summer after being diagnosed with chronic shingles. pooy
So, Bottom line - Looking for a climbing partner to help me get back into 5.12 TR shape and help me with my bigwall form. *Don't worry, I'm a lot less needy then I sound.
Cheers! Namaste

Good Question...

I loved living in Chico when I was going to school there but was always frustrated by the lack of climbing though that is relative. Heck they even have a climbing wall there now.
There are a bunch of places (Feather River, Castle Crags, Lassen, Bald Rock, Warner Valley, etc to name just a few) so do give up.

Finding a partner will help for sure. So I'm bumping this for ya!

Good luck.

the Grover Shipman guide might be helpful to you.

Mt Shasta Climbing Areas I think is the name...covers the upstate pretty well.

edit: Gosh, I spaced Paul's book. I'm either an idiot or had a long weekend...possibly both.

Plenty of great climbing not to far from Chico. (Though you won't discover it on Mtn. Project)Have you been into Chico Mountain Sports in downtown Chico? Don't remember if they have a board to post notes, but that would be a good place to put a note looking for a climbing partner if they do, as they cater to climbers. Pick up a copy of the local guidebook "Rock Climbs of Northeast California" by Paul Bernard (Over 600 routes within 30-90 minutes from Chico)while you are there for the scoop on all the nearby crags.

Go to Mountain Sports and ask about Grizzly Dome. Most weekends will have people climbing there. Look in MP at The Emeralds and Bowman Lake. They are pretty much local for Chico at about 1:45 away. Lot's of stuff there between 5.8 and 5.13. Check out Bidwell Park. World class bouldering if you look around. Yose is 4 hours away. Donner Summit is 2.5. Smith is 6.5 as is Bishop. Mammoth lakes, Clark Canyon, Patricia Bowl, Lovers Leap, The loaf, Auburn Quarry, Gold Wall, etc, etc. Not much climbing outside your door but lots close.

Like A-one said. Paul Bernard's book is great. Lots of detail and well written.
