Sitting here post-op for pre-cancer removal on lip. I've used all sorts of products over the years and the only thing that works is zinc (opaque) based lip stuff. Problem is all of the products I've tried come off easy and get on you when climbing, surfing, working and you have to constantly re-apply. Hard to do in the water or mid- forty foot run-out. Anyone know of a good product? I've been using Labiosan but still gets everything pink.

Now I use CVS brand clear spray SPF 70.

Do some research.

Reportedly parabens in the sunscreens above SPF30 lead to increased risk of skin cancer. The chemicals are absorbed in the system and cause hormonal changes.

Zinc oxide and Titanium dioxide mixtures operate simply by opacity and are not absorbed. You may look like a mutant but since most of us are, what's the loss? Micronized ZnO is reported to be less unsightly but you want to avoid breathing it.

I order SPF30 "Smart Girls who surf". Unfortunately none seems to be available at present. It is good stuff.

I've been doing some research and formulating. It is true Jstan that some things can get absorbed. The interesting thing is that I want opaque like zinc etc. because it totally blocks sun. Interestingly their are many new products promoting "nano" zinc which means smaller particles which can be absorbed because the public demands a clear product. I haven't found a clear product that can keep the reflection from burning me except opaque products like zinc but they've been messy. Burt's Bees had a great product called "lifegaurd" which was essentially natural chapstick with heavier "non-nano" zinc, was much less messy and was opaque. Unfortunately they discontinued it because it didn't sell well. I just mixed up a batch of equal parts "Zinca" and chapstick brand chapstick (about a tube and a half of the chapstick and equal parts zinca. I nuked them together for two minutes on high power, removed the container, swriled to mix and the results are pretty good! I simply poured the contents back into the tube. I will try full zinc powder next.

KINeSYS has been my favorite for many years. Comes in a spray or stick, and is alcohol free.

Forget the cheap white zinc oxide. Do they still make zinca! In different colors so you can tap your inner tribal warrior?

Edit: yes. Yes they do.

I thought zinc oxide had carcinogenic properties also. . .

I buy "Extreme Fluid" by La Roche Posay, the overseas version, online. I like it because I'm allergic to typical sunscreen ingredients and this also doesn't grease my hands before climbing. It is recommended for people who have sun allergies.

There's been very recent movement on getting the FDA to consider the sunscreens preferred by Europeans and Aussies for decades now. I'm looking forward to not paying an arm and a leg for internationally shipped sunscreens.

The zinc is effective, for about an hour.

I've seen two sports oriented dermatologists in the last year. One to do a full body scan for any little issues before they grow, the second a specialist who removed a few little bumps on my head. Pre-cancerous lesions, she called them.

Anyway they both recommend Neutrogena Ultimate Sport Sunscreen. I use the SPF 70 on the nose, face, ears, back of the neck, shoulders, etc. The SPF 30 seems fine for legs etc. I wear a visored hat rated SPF 40, although the docs said the is no testing or standard for those products.

Aveeno makes a zinc oxide cream with no fragrance, but it's marketed as diaper rash cream.

Ironically it's the only zinc oxide commonly available that will not make your nose or lips smell and taste like diaper rash cream.

It stays on a lot longer than an hour too.

NutAgain....The concoction I made has zinca. I want the zinc thicker so it doesn't rub off.
TGT.....is the Aveeno thick? Won't rub off easily? The key also is that "nano" gets absorbed. No nano zinc. Clear zinc apparently bad, and in any case nothing clear works for me. I'd rather look the clown then the corpse...

I keep coming back to All Terrain aqua sport spf 30

It is thick. Really hard to spread around and rub in, especially if it is cold. Once it is on it seems to last better then anything else i've tried and isn't greasy and slippery on your hands. They have a spray too but it is greasier.

ekat swears by this stuff...

Ombrelle with Mexoryl by L Oreal. . . buy the stuff from Canada. . . order it online - it's WAY cheaper from Canada than the US.

Non greasy, no fragrance, long lasting.

Before I found this stuff I was spending hundreds of $$$ a year having pre-cancerous lesions burned off my face. . . now I spend about one tenth that $$$ on Ombrelle and I LOVE it.

YOU WILL NOT GET A TAN, but the stuff is not pure white like zinc oxide, either.

:-)

eKat

and for lips..

Yer gonna laugh. . . but the best stuff I could find after looking for a long time was RITE AID 30SPF.

The stuff is really cheap. . . like 2 fer something silly like $1.69

It works beautifully. . . even when it's butt cold. . . it doesn't turn into a hard wax candle that you can't put on.

I just came back from a week long hike in the Sierras. I used TGT's Aveeno baby butt
rash suggestion. It's Da Bomb! It's zinc oxide is almost as good as the old titanium oxide.
No bad taste, stays on when applied liberally, and cheap!

As odd as it seems; Shirts, hats, pants and gloves...I see the older folks wearing their "sunscreen" all the time on the trail.

Use a physical block (like zinc). There are many advantages -- protection from UVA and UVB, works immediately. The Australians have the best sunscreen.

Sunscreen that is made to not show on your skin is basically useless.
