Didn't plan on getting out that way this year but sudden very important family obligations have come up.
I'll be getting to Tuloumne area around 7:00 pm this Friday (8/8) and need to get camping for six people. Any beta on what I can expect or what I can do to facilitate would be golden.

What are the odds of getting a site at Tioga Lake on Friday evening?

That's a big order.

Did you call the park? Half of Tuolumne is first come first serve:

I'd try Lower Lee Vining CG. Had lots of luck getting sites there.

Maybe Saddlebag Lake?

Do you have to be close to the car?

Another way around this is to contact Lynne Leichtfuss, as she is at TPR etc.

If you don't have pets and don't want to start a campfire, you might check out Mono Vista RV Park in Lee Vining. A tent site costs $25 per night and is on a level grassy area at the back. No RV generator noise since they all have hookups. And included in the rate are clean bathrooms with showers. Google for phone number if you're interested.

Odds of Tioga Lake on Friday after 5:00 PM close to nil.
If you want to rough it a tiny bit I've got a great spot.

Warren Fork is an unimproved USFS campground. Walk in about 7 minutes. Trail is a bit rough. Excellent unimproved campsites. No toilets. approx 3 miles east of Tioga Pass. FREE.

Drive up from Lee Vining on 120. At approx 7.3 miles from 395 (the infamous Mobil station) you encounter the first tight Lefthand curve. Just at the start of the curve there's a dirtbag turnout on the left (canyon) side of the road. Directly across the road on the uphill side is an old iron gate (obvious) blocking an old jeep trail. Park on the road close to the gate. There's room for 4 or more cars.

Fine camping is 7 minutes walk up the jeep road in a very nice open grove of pines. I've never found it completely full. Even if all the campsites are taken there's room in the woods slightly uphill to the East.
Nice little creek. picnic tables. fire rings. However you should have a FS fire permit in advance if you build a fire. The rangers I've met there are nice and if you've got a good story (driving from Colorado, after FS stations have closed, too tired to keep driving etc) and don't have a fire you'll be OK.
If you get to Ellery Lake you've gone 1/2 mile too far.

Current forecast for Friday night is 20% thunderstorms.

In case you didn't already know, Tioga Pass Resort (1 mile East of Tioga Pass) has great food for dinner or breakfast. With a little luck Lynne will be on duty.

EDIT: Clint says a right hand turn. That's if you're descending East from Tioga Pass.

Lower Lee Vining CG is fine but likely to be crowded or even full by the time you get there. RV's, families etc. About 1 1/2 mile West of 395. Approx $12 for site.

You can also call me if you have any questions.

Camping in YNP is dangerous, don't try it. You can be fined in many ways. If your food isn't stored properly you can be fined $5,000. If you go insane (temporarily) from getting a large fine, there is no telling what awful events may transpire. Try LA or Oakland, you could run 10 red light cameras and still be ahead of the game.

phones are back.

But, this is a tough time of year. Not likely to find anything open from Porcupine Flat to Ellery Lake after 10am on a Friday. Clint and HighTraverse have excellent advice! Second best option is if someone pipes up who has a site in the Meadows.

I generally don't like to camp where I can see or hear anyone else. I like the BLM land just south of Mono Lake off the 120. To me its worth the extra few minute in the am to camp legally in absolute solitude.

Last weekend it was my responsibility to book it from the Bay Area to Tuolumne to get a campsite for the week for my Colorado crew who were arriving on Sat evening. With the fire still burning last weekend, I managed to easily score a campsite at Tuolumne Meadows by arriving at the Meadows at 9:30 am on Saturday morning (yeah alpine driving starts). And there were still spots open until later in the morning. With it having rained off and on all this week, you might be in luck getting a spot up there as the "what is that falling from the sky?" crowd evacuate earlier than planned. Not sure about Friday night, but Sat morning at least. And we got West Crack to ourselves on Sunday! As in no other teams before or behind our team of three - woohoo! Wish I could offer you space in the site for Friday night but it will already be packed to capacity until Sat morning when most of the CO crew drive home. If you can't get a site for Sat night at the very least, drop by E1 and we can try and work something out for that night at the least (the last of our reservation) and it should be easier to get spots on Sun-?
