Is this some sort of contagious thing in SEKI?

That's a pretty busy area. Seems like if he's near a trail, he'd have been spotted by now.

no backpack?
That's a long way from anywhere in the summer without at least a couple of liters of water and some food.

Here is a better photo of Dawson than what SEKI posted: http://highsierratopix.com/community/download/file.php?mode=view&id=8937

Maverick, the link said I was not authorized to download the attachment, whatever that means.

I, too, don't like the sound of this, but I'll hope (and pray) that it turns out better than what I fear.

From what I read is sounds like he was day hiking from Crabtree to Mt. Whitney. No pack even on a substantial day hike seems odd, but maybe that was how he rolled. J. Muir didn't have a pack either.

Unfortunately, Dawson Johnson didn't make it. It has just been reported that rangers found his body yesterday evening:

That's a sad ending. Wonder what he was doing on the N Side.

No doubt he was severely dehydrated and, obviously, not thinking well.
That's a long haul up from Crabtree, especially for someone in their 70's.
I call it a two liter, minimum, hike. I wonder how many calories he took in, too.

Sad story. The no pack thing doesn't make sense. Possible he left it at Trail Crest and planned to get it on the return?

I guess now is not the time to quibble about the accuracy of the details (R.I.P.).

I'm curious as the owner of the news site that was on. What was inaccurate about it?

I'm very curious how he wound up on the North side. Short cut?

I've looked up that west slope and envisioned the FA party scrambling up that side for the first bag. Epic hard work and loose scree. I might attempt that some day if I ever get enough free time to fool around with that.

Maybe our guy had the same thought but, due to time, decided he could just come down it.
