Service is $100 a year, that includes position reports. I almost pulled the trigger on a Resqlink 406, but I like the Spot because you can replace the batteries in the field. Cmac gave Spot low marks when the Gen 2 was reviewed, I am hoping those issues have been fixed.

Having a spot decreases commitment factor on climbs. Like bringing a power drill to a crag. Drops down the bad-assery factor quite a bit. Supertopo hard men don’t need that s#@it!

I totally agree, but getting older and having a kid who depends on you changes that equation. What works for you may not be a risk others are willing to assume (or foist off on innocent third parties)
I am also making trips to very remote areas of the Grand Canyon where being stuck for days on the Redwall will kill you.

Jon, I just bought the ARC because it is fundamentally a superior product.
The transmitter is 5 times as powerful PLUS it transmits on the international
aviation guard frequency PLUS you don't need a damn subscription. Sending
it in every five years to have the battery replaced is no big IMHO. Also,
ARC builds EPIRBS for aircraft and boats so I trust their QC more. I read
too many complaints about SPOT'S reliability.

Reilly - It was a tough call, and as just an emergency device the ACR is superior. I think how and where the devices are to be used is a factor. If you have a set game plan and stay with the plan the ACR is good. If you are in terrain where your plan could change radically it will be reflected on the Spot track. The ACR is only good for 12 position transmissions. In remote parts of the Grand Canyon just getting to some of the trailheads on the North Rim can be epic.
Someone monitoring your Spot track could see that you are stuck on a dirt road, rather than 2k feet in the canyon. Big difference between calling a tow truck and calling SAR.
I was not comfortable with the ACR battery situation and I googled it and discovered that you could build a spare battery and change the battery yourself in the field.

Vitaliy - I know you are just kidding, but I am feeling very guilty about this purchase, after almost 30 years of climbing I just started wearing a helmet. Getting older means getting wiser, the younger generation calls it being a wus.

I picked up and really like the DeLorme InReach. Two way texting capability on largest satellite communication network. Subscription is comparable to Spot.

after almost 30 years of climbing I just started wearing a helmet Two friends and I, all about the same age, independently showed up wearing our mountaineering helmets to the crags the same summer. We'd all been climbing about 20 years and all had kids. This was 15 years ago.
At least with the personal radio transmitters there appear to be two distinctly separate uses. "Hi dear, no the bears haven't eaten me but the skeeters will" and the true SOS.
I'm strongly inclined to buy the ACR as I'm doing more solo backcountry travel and 2d/3d class peaks. The fellow who got injured and stuck descending Goddard a month ago comes immediately to mind. I always give my wife notice of my mountain journeys and she doesn't expect me to check in with her until my planned return.
