Denali Foundation to Raise Funds for ‘Peak Inspirations’ Exhibit through Kickstarter

International — July 24, 2014 — When Denali Schmidt was killed in an avalanche with his mountaineer father last year on K2, the second-tallest peak in the world, he left behind an array of artwork in a San Francisco storage unit.

That artwork will go on display in an international touring exhibit if a newly launched Kickstarter campaign is successful. The campaign to fund the exhibit was organized by the Denali Foundation, a group of artists and professionals, including Schmidt’s sister Sequoia Di Angelo, who hope to raise $330,000 by Monday, September 15th to tour Schmidt’s artwork in eight cities in five different countries.

The “Peak Inspirations” exhibit will start in San Francisco, where Schmidt graduated from the California College of the Arts, and will end in Wellington, New Zealand. Each location that the exhibit will show in holds a special significance in Schmidt's life.

The Kickstarter campaign will launch officially on July 27th.
Schmidt, an avid mountain climber, created paintings and installations inspired by mountaineering and climbing. The Peak Inspirations exhibit will meld the two worlds of art and adventure, allowing the public to experience the natural beauty and sheer power of the mountains through Schmidt’s artistic creations.

Schmidt saw the world through a unique lens — he climbed great monoliths in Yosemite, summited the highest peaks in North America and took ski jumps that few could follow. He would then return from an adventure to sit among his peers to debate the ethical complications of globalization, the aesthetics of contemporary art and the physics that put the stars in our sky. He spent hours in the studio painting and playing with materials, creating work informed by both these opposing viewpoints.

At first, he struggled with the division that existed culturally between the outdoors and the art world, but soon came to recognize his exclusive vantage point as a member of both. The mountains he climbed shook his soul and provided him with life and death insights he was able to express through his art practice.

“Denali deeply understood the beauty of the planet and the pure life force that comes from adventuring,” says Larisa Minerva, Schmidts longtime girlfriend. “The work he leaves behind is a gift for all of us to help recognize the world’s splendor through his brilliant blue eyes.”
