I have been doing solo trips and catching hell from family and friends, this ResQlink is just to cheap to pass up. Extremely light weight

Supertopo reviewed this product and gave it good marks. However the review noted that it did not have messaging capability. This is not completely true, the ACR beacons have a through-satellite test service ($40 year). The test confirms satellite receipt by sending an email back to you. You can use this test feature to send a daily "I am okay signal". For a few dollars more ($60 year) the message will include GPS coordinates.

You could make predetermined arrangements with your email contact that the self test signal will have a particular meaning depending on the time of day the signal is sent.

The rebate is good through the end of the month. The rebate is only valid if you bought for a fixed price (no auctions) and you paid more than $240 dollars, The GPS Store has it for $243.00

Thanks, Jon. Have been looking at the same unit and rebate.

This PLB does send out GPS info, but kills the battery very quickly doing this.

From the http://www.outdoorgearlab.com review:

....the ResQLink is only good for 220 self-test “OK” messages without GPS information, and 12 messages with GPS information, during the battery’s five-year lifespan.

Good point on the GPS message limit, that 12 GPS message limit is odd. They claim a 30 hour life on the battery, hopefully it sends more than 12 GPS messages in 30 hours!

Instead of the 50 dollar rebate you could opt for some nice gear, a strobe (worth 30 bucks) and a ditch bag that could be flipped for 50 bucks on Ebay, but you might have to wait till ebay gets cleared out of everyone else doing this.
