Saved that knucklehead's ass...nice job, rescue!

At least they aren't calling him a climber

Serious respect to the pilot and SAR dudes.

What the hell was that doofus thinking? That is a steep, technical face. Thought he was channeling Honnold, or what? Jeez.

Pretty funny that they left his pack behind, tho. Gotta pay some price, eh?

There are certainly worse ways to score a free chopper ride...

I was wondering how the guy got there; no mention of that on the news.
Still, he just lost his nerve...he was doing a pretty impressive job up until then. It does not appear he is even wearing climbing shoes.

You want to hope that if ever you get picked up like that, that the winchman isn't carrying a camera...

I wonder whether upon starting up he was thinking (a) "I'll just climb up a bit, have a look-see, then climb back down" or (b) "I'm gonna top out this chosspile".

It had to have been either (a) or (b); there is no (c).

Very curious.

Classic touron error. Easy to climb up, hard to climb down.

*disappointment* - I thought this was going to be a thread to network with other fat guy soloists. One of the funnier rescue videos I've seen, though.

That turkey should write a big check to Snohomish SAR

Technical question: how is it possible to hold the chopper so still?
Is it purely pilot skill or is there a clever form of autopilot?

Aww, leave the guy alone. Stupid? Of course. That's speaking the obvious, and no-one knows it better than this guy. And he absolutely should be responsible for the rescue costs, and issue an apology & appreciation to the guys who safely picked him off.

How many of us in our ignorant early years of climbing found ourselves in similar predicaments, but lucked out enough to find a way out, with only our egos bruised?

Yeah, it was stoooopid. But as some have observed, there's an awful lot of greybeards here who are pretty damn quick to make chortling sanctimonious commentary of n00bs like this. That's not particularly flattering.

^^^^ yeah, to his credit, that fat guy was climbing some steep shitt there; he must have been operating on powerful adrenaline bursts

Around here the stray hikers just get plucked off what look like low-angled dirt slopes

It's probably impossible to say but that really doesn't look that steep. Watch the angle of the cable against the rock just before he gets above the guy.

When I was 18 I did basically this exact thing while hiking in Switzerland. I was in way over my head and just got stuck. I became convinced I'd be yelling for a rescue and just hoping someone would hear me eventually. That seemed such a remote possibility that after forever I worked up the nerve and figured out how to traverse over to easier ground. If I had thought someone could hear me or if cellphones had existed then, I might well have got a helicopter ride.

I'm thinking there aren't that many of us here who haven't gotten in over our heads to the point of feeling a rescue might be necessary. Indeed it might only have been the lack of communication options that made us self-rescue or find another way.

Am I right?
