Big Rock is closing July 1 for 2 to 3 years due to the Perris dam reinforcement.

On Saturday June 21 a group of old timers are planning a farewell get together.

Everybody is invited - young and old - to bid adios and have a collective cry and watch it go.

Wes Warwick (who taught me how to climb in 1975) has been the organizer of this affair, and he is contacting the old timers not on ST.
Spread the word.

Bring food, beverages, ropes, biners, boots, extra chalk, harnesses and sunscreen..

Let us know if you want to join in on the Fun!!!

Not to worry.

There are plenty of other Big Rocks out there that will remain open.

Bummer ... like many others , Big Rock was one of the first places I went climbing .

I just hope they open it back up in 2-3 years as planned ... things that get shut down often stay closed as it is easier to keep it closed then open it back up .

I thought that place closed down in the late 70's.

2-3 years is nothing.

But I like the idea of a rally. Shows that it is important resource to the climbing community.

I am with munge...my first ever climbing experience was following my "pal"soloing in his climbing shoes with me in a pair of Chuck Taylor's, on the Trough slippery as f*#king thing. Thought I was going to die I did.

Sad to hear this, Craig. I only climbed there once, in 1974, but thoroughly enjoyed it.

LOL

If you climbed there in 74' it was supposed to be closed then.

I'll be ridin a century that day, otherwise I'd be there.

I have never climbed there, but want to do so before they close it. I hope I can go. Does anyone know where you can do camping at or nearby?

No wonder it wasn't crowded! The only climb we did whose name I remember is Let It Bleed, because it was one of my first 5.10 leads outside Yosemite National Park. At least that's what it was rated then. We did a few other one-pitch routes as well, but I can't remember their names. I do remember liking the plethora of bolts protecting the routes, though.

I like the idea of this, the celebration, not the closure.

I've only been there once, when passing through.

Party on team!
Three years will go by like nothing, but an excuse to celebrate and share common history, wil be history making.

Well, I'll miss the picnic bench anyway, but I bet it's already gone.
