Is it possible? Is he going to get up there and balk. Doesn't seem like there are huge steep drops off the top from the pictures I have seen. Is this guy legit? I would like to hear what the base jumpers on here have to say. Hank, El Cap Pirate, Chris Mac, and all the others what do you think.

Already been done right? By the French badass of the day.

Ran up the entire north face at night and jumped off the very summit landing in base camp five minutes later, somewhere around 1981.

Oh yeah, different rigs in those times but probably means they hauled heavier gear too. No disrespect to whatever this plan is by whoever it is though.

Pretty sure the Frenchie a decade or so ago had a para-glider or similar, not like a wingsuit/BASE jump.

Is it possible to launch a base rig via skis over the edge of a drop? Just curious...

Yeah I know, you're right. And I don't know what the differences really mean. But still, they ran up the thing to the top and jumped off using their own power. They didn't even epic. Almost 3 decades ago.

How big is the biggest steep drop off the top. Looks more like 80 degrees to me than an overhanging cliff, but what do I know I've probably never been within 10,000 miles of the thing. How about a BASE jump of Devils Tower? I think read somewhere it has been done.

And that's exactly what this guy is doing

not like a wingsuit/BASE jump.

He's neither base jumping nor wingsuiting. He's paragliding off the summit, and when he's well away from the mountain he's dropping from the glider into freefall. The whole thing is wilful misdirection of the press.

I aint no base jumper butt...

even if there is a steep face somewhere... isn't the air too thin to support his weight? I mean his wingsuit so he can get away from the wall? I think helocopters have a similar problem?

hope he does it safely!

I would think that both the paraglider and wingsuit will act differently at those altitudes than they do at say 10,000ft? if he cuts free from the parasail does it simply become more trash on the mountain?

Chhiring Lhakpa Sherpa ,our Sardar on a Mera climbing trip , told us about his ascent of Everest carrying skis and a parapente for Jean-Marc Boivin . Conditions were right for the parapente and not skiing and Jean-Marc jumped . Chhiring on his descent was injured by another Sherpas crampons.

Ogwyn jumped from a plane at altitude and found that, contrary to what he assumed would happen - he flew faster and further than lower down.

Ogwyn practically ran to the summit of Everest when he was 24. He's pretty familiar with the peak. Seems like if anyone can pull this stunt off, he's the one.

Well, he's calling it off. Just heard it on the news. Says it's due to the Sherpa tragedy.
