Hello tacostand! I am putting together a new climbing guidebook for the Tuolumne Meadows area, and would like your help. There has been much new route development in the meadows in the last ten years and its time for a new, modern guidebook. The existing falcon guide has gone out of print and the supertopo is not a complete “area” guide, so there is nothing new for the whole of the area. I'd like to put together something that covers the entire Tuolumne region with all those neat new routes that you may have noticed bolts on, but never climbed(or maybe you did, tell me about the route so I can include it?). Its time to call on the climbing community, please help me build a new guidebook for you!
How You Can Get Involved:
1) Let me know what you want in a guidebook!
I want this text to be as inclusive and comprehensive as possible so your input and ideas are greatly appreciated.
2) Send route information.
I'd like to include as many new routes and areas as possible, so if anyone has put up new routes please send me pictures, route descriptions, locations, first ascent information, anything you have. Please email topos, route descriptions, or new areas to rubberband.warrior@yahoo.com to keep the information as clear as possible.
3) Historical information
I would very much like to put together a detailed history of climbing in Tuolumne Meadows, from start to present, landmarks in climbing, when sport climbing ethics were introduced, aid lines freed, areas established, etc. References as to where previously published information could be found(old climbing magazines or journals) would be greatly appreciated.
My goal is to create an accurate and current guidebook, anyone looking to contribute will be given credit for their submissions.
Focus of Guide
Everything accessed by 120 East from Crane Flat to 395. I am going to do my best to include areas around the four high sierra camps, accessed through Tuolumne Meadows, leaving Merced Lake for a different guide. Anything put up in the back-country that is accessed from that section of 120 would be excellent to have!
Many thanks for your help.

A major undertaking. Good luck Robin.
How many new routes you figure? How many total? Will it cover peaks as well?

Ryan,
I'd like to include a few of the major peaks, but only technical routes, it depends on how big the whole thing is near the end, because I'm not sure just how many new routes are there but would speculate 150-300.
Clint,
Chris Falkenstein says that it is no longer in print. The copies are just those left over from the final printing, there haven't been any available in Tuolumne since 2011. We tried to order them(at the tuolumne store and mtn shop) but were told that they were out of stock.
stzzo,
A PDF might be in order, its a good idea and many people would be interested!

For this effort to be a step up from the existing guide, I think there needs to be a big emphasis on expanding and updating the topos.

Robin,
Thanks for explaining.
I wonder if this is due to a decision by Falcon that they do not want a regular topo guide anymore and want a color overlay book instead?
I easily bought one on Amazon last summer when I needed a copy for rebolting.
But if you can't order them to stock in shops, that is a problem.
If it's a publisher decision and Chris/Don want to do more updates,
then you could help them look into alternative publishers.
On a practical level, making a guidebook usually involves a lot of time on graphics work for little or no pay.
To encourage contributions of topos or other material, you may need to demonstrate that you can do this. Such as with some sample topos.
Another option you may want to consider is helping Greg update the supertopo guide by converting old topos to that format.
That would be one way of broadening the guidebook to include more.
He has been involved in many of the new routes, so that part is probably
already taken care of (at some level).

You should difinitely check with Clint, Roger Brown, Greg Barnes, Bryan Law et.al. The guys who've replaced bolts have a ton of info as they've been there and many of the routes are different then in the older guides.

RyanD, I am still working on the guide, I am hoping to launch a promotional website with some samples of overlays and a route submission feature sometime in the next two months.

W.L. No, there is still a lot of work to do, I'll need one more season up there. I'm aiming for a release next spring, but do not have a set date at this time.
