My girlfriend left me, my dog is old and I have to move from Mammoth/Bishop to Ridgecrest. Well I don't have to but am going back to school after 14 years of enjoying life and slacking off on the East side. Here is my question, is there any good climbing in the Ridgecrest area? I have been out to the Owens ridge (super obscure possibly the windyest place on earth) but was wondering about Trona or other cragging/bouldering options? Any Ridgecrest climbers on ST?

Thanks,

Steve

Just remember, if you are living in ridgecrest and feeling sorry for yourself, just drive to Trona, and know it could be worse!

Go to Trona Pinnacles! I think its kinda chossy, but hey! Then there is all of 395 to the north...

Lived in Ridgecrust for 5 years way back when...

Head up to Great Falls Basin, just up the road from beautiful downtown Trona.

There's an area southeast of ridgecrest, off the Trona/Red Mtn. road. I played out there in the early 80's. Lots of problems, some quite tall.

Great Falls looks very interesting. Past it many times on the way to the Saline Valley.

Well, I could tell you about our new secret area out by Trona, but then I'd have to kill you. Instead I will just say one word: Wagonwheel.

Here are some climbing areas near Ridgecrest:

Great Falls Basin (just outside Trona)

Wagon Wheel (bouldering area refered to by Ol' One Eye)

Fossil Falls (40 miles driving distance to the N. along 395 at the cinder cone)

Owens Ridge (as you already know)

 Heller Rocks (near Owens Ridge)

 Kern Slabs (n. of Kernville)

Also, there is a Yahoo group for Ridgecrest climbers:

There is what I consider to be the perfect boulder just east of the 14 on the Burro Schmidt Tunnel Rd just north of Red Rock Cyn. About 2 miles east of the 14 on the north side of the Burro Schmidt Rd lies a old quarry with lots of possibility but one spectacularly aesthetic boulder sitting in the middle of a large sandy alcove. 15' high with sharp aretes and steep faces. It's a fun stop on the way north and just a cool place to hang out.

One possible long term option for Ridgecrest:
Speak to China Lake Base about getting access to the
bouldering ridges just south of the Black Planets,
alongside 395. A couple miles worth of potential bouldering
all along the volcanic edges.
There's a fairly new fence there now.
I don't think they really use that land, since there is another power line east of the ridges already.
Might take 10-30 years, but maybe eventually they'd think about it.

Get a big 4 stroke and rip. Max Jones told me over a decade ago that the future of climbing is MX bouldering....become a sub-creature, aka The American Dream.

Just be happy you are not living anywhere like Bloomington Indiana. My friend can't even find rock after driving three hours away from his location. Ridgecrest is at least drivable...

I agree, I hate it when my dogs get old. They don't live long enough for all the love they are so willing to give.
Sending a big hug to your fuzzy face.

426, Don't know havn't tried it with a pad yet. But my guess is it would act like a parachute at the end of a drag race.:->

The OP made me think of these lyrics:

Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got run over by a damned old train

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sco_eBvXGTQ

Hers's the whole shebang:

You Never Even Called Me by My Name

David Allan Coe (Songwriters: John Prine / Steve Goodman)

Well, it was all
That I could do to keep from crying'
Sometimes it seemed so useless to remain
But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even called me by my name
You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings
And you don't have to call me Charlie Pride
And you don't have to call me Merle Haggard anymore
Even though you're on my fighting' side
And I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standing' in the rain
But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even called me by my name
Well, I've heard my name
A few times in your phone book (hello, hello)
And I've seen it on signs where I've played
But the only time I know
I'll hear "David Allan Coe"
Is when Jesus has his final judgment day
So I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standing' in the rain
But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even called me by my name
Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song
And he told me it was the perfect country & western song
I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not the perfect country & western song
Because he hadn't said anything at all about mama
Or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting' drunk
Well, he sat down and wrote another verse to the song and he sent it to me
And after reading it I realized that my friend had written the perfect country & western song
And I felt obliged to include it on this album
The last verse goes like this here
Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got run over by a damned old train
And I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standing' in the rain, no
But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even called me
Well, I wonder why you don't call me
Why don't you ever call me by my name
