Fred was alive and well when those diatoms which formed the limestone of the Dolomites were alive and well.

Wow! I just climbed that route this past Monday morning! It was "Torre Quarta Bassa, Regular Route" in the Cinque Torri. UIAA Gr. III+, 3 leads, according to Mauro Bernardi's guidebook. The first lead is quite polished by passage of probably 10,000 set of hands and feet.

To call him a legend would be an understatement. I was lucky enough to see him give a slideshow in Tahoe few years back. I'm always inspired how he just keeps going and going.

The dude was the man at the Tahoe International Film Festival. It was at one of the casinos, I think in '08 or so. Might be the same event. Good times.

Because a bowline was all they had back in 1907 when he learned.
I have a book copyrighted in 1970 and Beckey is therein referred to as a " veteran climber"
