Sports stars can often be aloof and full of themselves.

Today, Phil Mickelson proved himself a true champion and human being, when, even during the course (no pun intended) of pursuing the victory at the Open Tournament in Scotland, he took the time to sign autographs, fist bump and high five the fans, and even hand a ball to a young boy with a broken arm, and chat him up a bit.

The man is exemplary.

Congratulations Phil!

EDIT: I had the privilege of playing a round of golf with Bachar. At one point he said, "Ya know....this is a game of masters. I could play this game my whole life, and never reach the equivlant of 5.7."

Truth.

Lefty shot a 66 today, the best of his career ... and to birdie the last 4 holes... dang.

Class act, for sure, and a great way to follow-up his win at the Scottish Open last weekend.

Yes, very much a class act, and glad to see him win. Wish more sports superstars were like him.

Golf shoes and climbing shoes are on a par.

Designed to stay put like heck.

Colorful as heck.

Expensive as heck.

Phil has been, for me, an acquired taste. There is something a little smarmy about mamma's boy. There have been gentlemen who remained gentlemen all through their careers whom I esteem, Bob Jones among them, Arnold Palmer, as well.

In golf, as in life, nobody's perfect, just their games.

Edit: Thanks for the chiding, Cragman. I am left no choice as a gentleman. Congratulations, Mr. Lefty, your game was right on today. You earned the accolade of champion. Act accordingly.

A good walk spoiled, but Lefty was grace under pressure today. Finishing with the birdy was classic.

Prod, et al,

Seriously?

You DO know we are talking about a human being, right?

I would venture a guess that even denizens of ST have their share of bad days, and do things of which we are not so proud.

We also, should we be so fortunate, have our days of glory.

Phil was astounding today in his commitment to achieve a goal....one that few people in the history of the world will EVER achieve.

Perhaps we should allow him all the accolades due him in his triumph, and save the sniping for ourselves, when we look in the mirror.

Sheesh.

I'm pretty sure he played the race card today by winning a big tournament of the whitest of all games.

That's an interesting story, Prod; I'll take your word for it if you saw it first hand. I could tell lots of stories of folks who are revered in public but act like jerks behind the scenes. As well, some folks publicly viewed as heels are, in private, absolute gems.

Just for fun, google FIGJAM.

"Chat up" might be a poor choice of words, seeing as this was the British Open.

chat up
vb (tr, adverb) Brit informal
1. to talk flirtatiously to (a person), esp with the intention of seducing him or her
2. to talk persuasively to (a person), esp with an ulterior motive

Unless that's what the OP was implying.

Yeah, I also remember someone pissing on our President on an OT appreciation thread someone started for him.
