Do any routes exist on this gorgeous rock? Let me know if you have climbed the west face of thunder mountain, I know there are sport climbs on the top and north east side. Wondering if anyone has done any trad climbing on the vertical wall in the center/left side of the west face.

Im not surprised due to the amount of fallen rock at the base in this photo, still I am stubborn as heck so I will still attempt to climb...a friend of mine has a cabin on Silver Lake and I am always looking up at it wondering if it has any potential. I think it may at least be worth a hike to the base and a look with binoculars. Any Idea what type of rock that is? Looks volcanic...

We prefer to climb on these fragile cliffs in winter when the
Medium is frozen together and the a abundant bird life is not there

Thanks Salamanizer, I think we are going to try the big wall at Lower Bear Reservoir instead, seems to be much nicer rock. Although would love to pick your brain about Old Camp Bluff and Calaveras Dome some time.

Never been to Old Camp Bluff but I could tell ya a thing or three about Lower Bear River and Cal Domes.

Some Old camp bluff info here (ducks and runs for cover).
Rumor has it there are some beautiful many pitch sport routes at bear river resevoir. I'll be heading there shortly myself.
I was surprised to read that the sentinel has some sport routes on it and is supposedly decent rock. haven't checked it out for myself though.

I remember something about Jay Smith and Paul Crawford doing the dihedral long ago. I think they did it as a straight out rock climb, like how they did that tower by Round Lake in the Meiss Country and Shakespeare Rock.
The rock is a mix of welded volcanic ash and mud and a conglomerate/breccia sort of stuff. I bouldered some of that conglomerate at Round Lake and the rocks welded in the matrix sometimes pop off without warning.
The entire Carson Range, from Thunder Mtn past Kirkwood, around Caples Lake, East of Hope Valley (Picket Guard Pk and Hawkins Pk), south to the head of Summit City Canyon, and to the north edge of the Meiss Country including Little Round Top is actually a remnant of the ancient volcanic layers that overlay most of the Sierra granite batholith before the unlift and glaciation cycles that created the modern Sierra Nevada. It lays on top of the granite, which you can clearly see looking south from the hiking pass leading from Carson Pass into the Meiss Country. The granite comes up a little from Woods Lake and then contacts the volcanic layers very clearly. So it's very ancient rock and in fact you can find fossil leaves, although very broken, in the contorted layers near the summit of Round Top. I used to spend a couple of weeks every summer when I was a kid at Caples Lake and I've been all over that place so I'm rather into it.
I've looked at that corner a lot, quite the line. Good luck and wear a helmet I guess.
