I bought an adaptor for my tacoma that plugs into the back of the stereo and then plugs into an ipod/iphone.

i create plays lists on my mac, transfer them to the ipod, and then i can control what plays via the head/stereo.

yes, quit using the macbook.

eKat ... when I did a road trip with a friend who had an iPod, I simply purchased a phone charger that plugged into the lighter, that had USB ports (2 of them, 1 for phone, 1 for iPod). It worked really well for us.

:)

(I will not mention the fact that 10b and I had issues making it work when he was here. I believe it was end user error on our part.) ;)

Nano now has a screen.

That is the Shuffle.
I had a shuffle... I lost it at the upper parking lot of the Leap. It's that small.

Works great when soloing etc.

Problem as you stated, it selects the song, you either listen or skip to next song.

There's been MANY iPods.

I'd say look for a 4th or 5th generation iPod Nano on ebay. Maybe $50. They have a wheel and button for control. Newer iPod touch's have a touchscreen like an iPhone.

You could get a cheap, new mp3 player, but if you are used to Apple stuff I'd say go with an iPod.

But, you may want to get an older iPhone like a 3GS for $150 and get cheap prepaid cellular like airvoice. Then you'd have an iPod and a smart phone (directions/maps, internet/news, email, etc.)

I bought an iphone 3GS 16GB on ebay for under $100. I unlocked it an use it as a smart phone with Net10, unlimited data and voice for $45/mo. It's an incredible toy. You could just use it as an ipod, it has a screen. I have lots of climbing and base jumping videos to watch when I'm on the train or need to kill time. ie, just buy an old iphone and get all the functions, phone, video, audio, GPS, and a million applications.

< RANT >

I just bought an iPhone5, my first Apple product.

I cannot figure out how such a backwards company like Apple became so popular. Damn, their stuff is so difficult to use and it's not intuitive. I may not be programming in 5 different computer languages anymore, but I think I'm still pretty saavy with computers and technology.

iTunes is a giant POS. At least with Windows-based stuff you can fumble your way through the program with educated guesses. With Apple programs, it's a complete mystery maze without any logical clues as to what this or that button will do for you.

Syncing the iPone is a nightmare, the screen display is not intuitive and it's difficult to figure out what it's doing. My ring tones keep disappearing, and even when I follow the instructions step-by-step, it doesn't work as advertised and I still can't transfer .w4r ringtones from iTunes to the iPhone. And even when I can see the ring tones and music on my iPhone in iTunes, and I sync, it still does not appear on the iPhone when I unplug it. You would think that Apple would have worked out the software bugs by now.

I f*#king hate Apple.

Yeah iTunes is a heaping pile of dog sh#t. You would think a company with $billions of cash would start fresh and do it right. No, they continue to build upon the house of card iTunes made for iPods in 1999.

iOS is pretty great though. My 3 year old can do tons of stuff by himself.

Just had this installed in my Toyota 4 Runner...2 hours, $400.
Could not deal with tape inserts that supposedly play Ipods or run through the FM system. This unit has Satellite, HD Radio, Pandora, and IPOD/IPHONE plug via USB or wirelessly with Blue Tooth.

I find satellite radio ESSENTIAL for road trips. This unit does Satellite Radio and all the jacks, including USB are on the front so no clunky trying to make things work. Plus the display will let you know what song, artist etc is playing and you can easily access song folders you have set up on your IPOD . All your ibooks are easily accessible. If you have steering wheel audio control already, they can add a module that allows you to continue to use your steering wheel audio controls. You can also play Pandora radio or Slacker radio through Blue Tooth. And if you have a Blue Tooth phone it syncs totally with that and you are all "hands free"

As for IPOD...I would recommend the basic IPOD. Shuffle has no capacity to set up files or see what is playing.

Expensive? yeah, considering you need to get the IPOD also, but for road trips, a quality audio system, for me, is essential. And this unit is just barely above "entry level" for after market systems.

Edit.

Stuff from Apple (car charger, wall charger) is about 4X the cost of buying off ebay.

Get an FM transmitter for it. It plugs into the port on the bottom and plays your music on an FM channel of your choosing. That way, you simply tune your radio to the selected FM channel. No wires.

I have the shuffle for traveling. It's small, cheap, replaceable and no... It isn't good for plugging into the car. It seams to last longer than anything else so for camping trips and long flights, it is really awesome. Plus if it does get stolen/lost, not a big loss. Yes, you have no idea what's on, but you just shuffle up or down to find the song you like. It's not a bad deal for what it is. Plus the weight is awesome for climbing. You don't notice it on you at all.

I also use my iPhone for the car. It's not a cheap device but being an all in one. Really not bad. I love the GPS, camera, music, emails, phone in one little package. I always can take a picture, send it, get directions and listen to U2 at the same time. Seriously... When did we get so over connected? Yes, I am also famous for leaving it at home. (As I have told Bill, I leave to GO AWAY!)

You can get knock offs at radio shack. Approx $30

You can also get universal fm transmitters that plug into the headphone jack for a cheaper price.
