I had the great pleasure to climb with Tommy's dad Mike in the late 1980's at Lumpy Ridge, Devil's Tower and in Josh. I have fond memories of climbing Kor's route "Mr. President" (devious, deceptive, never does what you think it should...) and routes on the Crescent Wall. We did many others too, but those stick in my mind...
Mike led me up Two Moons Over Hewlett on the Tower one time, leapfrogging a few tcu's all the way, so when my turn came to follow there was no gear on the pitch!
I think Tommy was in diapers then.

Those granite peaks are not in Pakistan. They're in Kyrgyzstan. From left to right they are Peak 4810, Peak 1000 Years of Russian Christianity, and Kotina. Together they form the dividing ridge between the Ak Su valley and the Kara Su valley in the Karavshin region of the country. In summer 2012 my buddy Pete and I made the first alpine-style enchainment of all three peaks by that striking ridge line. We climbed hammerless and all free over four days. We call it the Clear Water Traverse. Probably 10,000 feet of climbing up to 5.11, plus about 50 rappels. The rappelling was epic.
The shots in the movie were probably taken from Russian Tower, yet another beautiful tower in the area that's home to an incredible 800m crack line called Perestroika Cracks. Google it. It's as good as it looks in the photos.
The Karavshin is an unbelievably beautiful place. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes splitter granite and sunny skies.
Tommy is the man.

I really enjoyed that.
I met Tommy for the 1st time 3 months ago, in Curry Village.
He was alone, and since I always admired his ethics and style, I overcame some inhibitions and just went up and introduced myself.
He probably thought I was a tourist, being over twice his age, with the white hair and all.
After chatting briefly, he mentioned that he knew right away that I was a climber by looking at my hands, since I had just got off a few hard off-widths.
I had a very good first impression of him.
