And not to be disrespectful to my late (closest and one of the finest winemakers) brother, Mac died May 18, and who I loved dearly, but I today I was disowned by my eldest brother Casey. Emails, think them through then hit send.

But we have to be, I don't know, light hearted about certain things. And it is true, you can pick your friends but not your family.

Okay back to my main question, I'll post a question I asked a Mac technician here in Ireland who has done some work for me.

Here goes...

Adam

I am near broke, so I cannot pay for your advice, but just to send you my best wishes for 2013.

But my iMac had been really slow lately, primarily on the net (Jim next door says that his WiMax is quite slow), but even my Word programme and others.

What is the best way to clean up my Mac?

Can you direct me to an online solution?

I'll name my first born after you (okay too late for that, I will not be having children).

It took me about four minutes to write this. Something is not right.

Cheers, and your front gates, etc look pretty good.

Cheers

And...

And it is not the porn. I dumped that, ha ha

Except the climbing porn...Supertopo, irishclimbers.ie, UK Climbers, Mountain Project, SummitPost, it just took me about three minutes to write that. something is not right.

Mac people, if Adam, who is really good but quite busy, I think, and not working for himself now doesn't answer me, what can I do to speed up my iMac?

And no, I have yet to go online (i.e. Google) to find out, between taking care of Jennie and having a flame war with my eldest brother (boy has he hurt me, and not for the first time).

I see these "programs" Clean up Your Mac, but I am weary (oops not the right word, or is it?) of them.

yeah, best to stay away from the "Clean up Your Mac" type advertised programs. Poison. I've only heard bad things about them. Long, long ago I had Nortons installed and it, too really slowed things down.

Slowing down can be caused by any number of things.

First step, make sure you are up to date on whatever version of the operating system you have. Go to the apple symbol, top left, scroll down to System Preferences, click on "Software Update," click on "check now." Update whatever needs to be updated. Repeat until it tells you that everything is "up to date."

Do the same for Word, check for updates and patches. Word can be a problem. Used to be that nasty things could pretend to be innocent Word-sanctioned Macros. Not sure if that's still true.

Restart.

Other things:

Your hard drive may be is getting full. This will slow things down.

Or it could be a hardware issue. Your hard drive may be getting old. Take this as fair warning. Back up everything you care about, just in case.

There is a mac virus, called Flashback (you can google this for details) that pops up and pretends to be an Adobe Flash update advisory. Sneaky.

A pretty good scanning software is ClamX. It is free, scans behind the scenes for any viruses or whatever, but only when you ask it to. It's well behaved.

Good luck.

Repair your disk utilities, I just did mine this am & it's so much faster. Wish I could tell you how but my wife is a Mac nerd so she did it for me. I'm sure google knows. I guess you are supposed to do it on the reg.

I've made the complete PC-to-Mac conversion over the last year- bought an IMac last January, and a MacBook Pro about 4 months ago. The IMac is wonderful and fast...the MacBook, even though is virtually brand new, with the latest OS...kinda pokey.

A buddy of mine who's a MacNerd wonders if it isn't something in the latest OS. Whatever it is, it bums me out that my MacBook is already glitchy.

If Spotlight takes it into it's head to do a full re-index, this can cause problems.

Likewise, Time Machine can slow things down

Open "Console.app" and look at what's happening in the logs.
Report back.
