Crap. I've been worrying about this all summer. People just don't get how dry and combustible everything is.

Man, what a year. I guess Jack's Canyon down in AZ burned last week too. Didn't look too bad from the few pics I saw.

Aside from the wildfires, the midwest grain crops are getting hammered. Corn plantings are at all time highs, but the heat/dryness during the pollination window basically screwed the crop. On pace for the worst year since '88 and the soybeans are getting hammered too. Not just the US either, Russian and Uzbek wheat crop is suffering big time.

So sad. I feel sick about this. Hard to see a place you love go up in flames.

Hoh man!
I wonder how the cobbles/matrix deals with that intense heat.

Hope the nearby people (and turkeys) are okay!

Mmm. Roast turkey.

Seriously, the rumors floating around from local climbing friends are that this was accidentally started by a climber.
Argh. If true, proves that we are equally as dumb as other users groups.

I talked with a friend who had to run out of there today to avoid getting trapped by the fire, leaving her rope up on a climb. She heard it was accidentally started by a climber burning his used toilet paper! Holy shit!

Some kids at Lover's Leap the other day thought it was OK to leave a RAGING fire in their campsite while they went climbing... Embers flying into manzanita.. Good thing for good samaritans... Dumped their whole cooler onto the fire and schooled them later... The kids had no clue... They came back to a dry cooler

Amazing....back East they have preemptively closed down climbing a couple times in the past when fire danger was high. In the West where fire is far more common, you would think that there would be a little more awareness.

friend of mine on SAR out here said it was small, only in one corner, the evac was more preemptive than anything else...no more details though, but he seemed to think the impact will be minor (he climbs, btw...so i think he might have half a clue...)

The canyon just opened. The fire is reported to be 100% contained. The rumor I heard is that the fire was low in the canyon, below the bridge. If so it hopefully didn't affect the campground or the climbing areas up right fork.
