We were climbing on hemingway buttress around noon today when an ambulance came down the main park Rd lights and sirens. Followed by two sbco sheriffs units also rolling code 3. Then a fire apparatus from sbco fire department and ranger vehicles, all rolling lights and sirens.
The Firetruck left about a half hour after arriving but didn't see any of the other vehicles following them out.
Anyone know what happened? Was a good sized roll out. Hope no one was hurt badly.
Just wondering
Beth

I saw the same thing around 12:30 or so. The interesting part was the two Sheriffs cars. Not usual with a "normal" accident. Might have been a traffic accident. Usually the CHP is called in when there is a traffic issue with injuries.

Looks like two Dutch nationals (a couple) were found deceased out on Black Eagle Mine road in the park. No other info has been released so far. Very sad.

Turns out it was a person scrambling who took a tumble. The reason for the Sheriff was the call to 911, not NPS dispatch. He managed to walk to the ambulance and was taken to the hospital.
Sounds like he'll be ok!

Bill Becher, California Outdoors Writer of the Year in 2004, was reportedly paralyzed in a 30-foot fall last Monday at Saddle Rock in Joshua Tree National Park.
According to rangers at Joshua Tree National Park, Becher was climbing Saddle Rock, a 110-foot technical ascent considered the most difficult in the park. He fell 30 feet and landed on his lower back, rangers said.

Oh cripes-
ANYONE who knowa ANYTHING about JTree climbing can quickly see that the reporter who wrote that piece got their facts all twisted, to such an extent that nothing reported there about the climb, or the accident, or even the circumstances of the fall can be taken seriously...
That's really disappointing coverage.
Best to the victim, hope he can recover(?)
