Very cool. The site is huge. I didn't see the smaller scale square in the upper right corner at first. When I did... WOW! There is a ton of great stuff there!

Really? Black Sabbath invented heavy metal? That will surprise some musicologists.

I would agree that Black Sabbath was the first entry in the genre.

One might correctly say the Jimi Hendrix was first which would also be true but he wasn't really trying to be metal. He was more of a hippy, peace-love-dope band.

Jimmy Page with Led Zeppelin is also a solid metal forerunner. Some other British influences; the Kinks, Eric Clapton, etc.

Sabbath was the UK version of Metallica.

Metal is the darker younger sibling of rock and roll. Bands like Jethro Tull were too melodic. Deep Purple, too commercial.

In America Alice Cooper did a great job of capitalizing on pop-metal. Kiss looked like metal but their music was strictly pop-rock.

No doubt that Sabbath fused and created the sound of metal like no-one before them. Not sure I'd go so far as to say they did it without influence, though.

Blue Cheer, MC5, Iggy/Stooges...these, and many others developed a sound and style that later, more iconic bands (mentioned upthread) drew upon.

I re-posted the same link a year ago with the tagline, "this truly is why Al Gore invented the internet." I think that still holds up.

For Sabbath heads, check out Julian Cope on "Behind the Wall of Spock" (live recording from the 70s): http://www.headheritage.co.uk/unsung/albumofthemonth/750/

Black Sabbath may have started it but Slayer perfected it. Pantera is my personal favorite plus,

Between the Buried and Me
Opeth
Dying Fetus
The Dillenger Escape Plan
Meshuggah
Early Metallica
The Black Dahlia Murder
Sepultura
Tool (Should have their own genre)
and of course the Backstreet Boys

My first show was Tool when Undertow came out and they played most of Opiate too. It was the last show at the venue and the next day it became a church. Maynard had some funny remarks about God moving in and what better way to say farewell than Tool's Opiate song. Seen them Eight times and would see them another eight if they'd ever come out with that many albums, but that ain't happening. Also, unless you've experienced Tool on hallucinagens you still haven't heard them.

Yeah, I'm stoopid, I'll fix that.

Edit: Oh I'm plenty stoopid, but love the King Crimson and I noticed they made the Metal list as progressive metal. Their Red album is one of my favorites of all time.

Edit again: Apogee now I look really stupid, hahahah
