Here is a topic I bet many here can relate to and have some insight on.
Ageing feet in rock shoes?
Some foot issues mentioned here:
http://coldthistle.blogspot.com/2011/07/your-feet.html
A quick response was :
"How about avoiding injuries by strengthening your foot with barefoot/minimalist shoes running ? I had all kind of pains in my feet for the last 5 years and cured them all in 3 months running once a week for 15 minutes in minimalist shoes(will do 2 times a week starting next month). It also increased my calves endurance so going uphill is much easier now."
I have some thoughts on that but anyone else care to add their own on barefoot/minimalist shoe, running?
More on point?
"The other day I looked at my feet and I did a double take…they just didn't seem to be mine! Last time I looked the toes were straight and the skin had a nice glow, no swelling or dryness...what happened? Then I realized I'd gotten older, and so have my feet. My feet, and the rest of me are now 65 years old. I've been a podiatrist for 39 years, and I'm used to looking at ""old feet;"" however, I never thought of myself as being old, so until now I didn't see my feet as they are…""old feet."" That's when I became interested in finding out just what is the Aging Foot (Old Feet)."

Will it hurt one's arches? My brother is flat footed and my own are pretty pathetic. It's almost like I am on the verge of being flat footed myself. Should I be concerned?
Yes, I love being barefooted. I actually can do that more than a few days a week.

"Just because you have flat feet does not mean you will have problems or pain. If you do have pain, there are various treatment options available. If you only have one foot that has a flat arch, it may be due to another problem and you should get it checked out."
No clue what running barefoot or with a lwt shoe will do to your feet. Some love it others can't do it at all without pain.

Been flat flopper footed since I hatched. It has never been a problem to me. :)
Cool - you can see how flat they are in the xrays below!
edit: Zoinks! The feet photographed in your blog....BLECK!!! My bunions were pretty impressive (but more importantly, they were hideously painful) but my feet never looked like that! :o Now my new feet look and feel good (and are still flat as a pancake)

I go barefoot as much as possible. I am lucky being a Pilates teacher I have to take off my shoes at work. I like doing easy climbs and most descents barefoot as well, top of Tahquitz to Lunch Rock for example is nice.
A lot of Pilates work is good for the feet. "Footwork," as it is called is done standing on or pressing away a bar with the feet while doing leg presses, first on the toes with the heels high, then on the arches with the foot wrapped (think bird on a perch,) then on the heels with the toes flexed toward the shins, then in turnout on the toes, then stretching the calves. All great for the feet and legs. I also like this version which is done without any equipment.
Yoga has some great stuff for flat feet too:
Yoga for feet
I also like combining elevation and stretching for the ankles and feet. Lie flat on your back, legs straight and long. Bring your right knee to your chest and then extend the leg up towards the cieling. Keep your knee straight while flexing (toes toward the shin) and extending (toes to the sky) your foot. After several repetitions begin to circle the foot for several reps in each direction. Bring the knee to the chest and then extend the leg out onto the floor with length. Do the other side.
That is great after a big day of hiking.

I full-on sprinted at the beach this morning from a wave in my 2 1/2 sizes smaller La Sportiva Solutions. That couldn't of been good for my feet.

RDB, as of yesterday my feet are 68 years old. They aren't very attractive, I use a dremel tool to trim down the fungus on my big toes, but they work okay and are never painful even in Indian Creek cracks.

I got me some purty feet.
I wear my regular street size in rock shoes. No super squeezies here, now or ever. Comfort rules. There are plenty of painful things in the world. Your feet don't have to be that.

Running in the minimal shoes like Nike Frees requires a different technique than most runners use. No heel strike. You need to run on a midfoot strike. If you run with a traditional heel strike type of stride in these new minimal shoes you'll be sorry.

Hey for that fungus nail crap, brush 'em with soapy water every time you are in the shower, rinse 'em thoroughly and apply tea tree oil with a swab. Do this regularly for a while and presto, you'll have presentable feet.

I had done a rigging job and shifted some gear around. Yes I need more dedicated rigging gear and keep it separated from the rock climbing gear. Any way... A friend and I went out early morning to beat the heat. He wanted to just go rattle off most of the routes on the 'Panty Wall'. I got there and realized my shoes and chalk bag were not present as I had thought.
So I made him lead and I followed everything bare foot. It was a lot of fun ;)
How many remember when Cantwell got onto a barefoot bender and would climb with chalk in a sleeping bag stuff bag because it was large enough and hung low enough that he could stuff his feet in when they got sweaty?

My feet are killing me. I work all day on my feet in a kitchen and it is not like walking. Add to that an occasional gout attack and you have a recipe for angry feet.

My dogs are barking too. Mid fore-foot bones/tissue just kills me. Big holds are worse than small, can't do foot jams. Been biking a lot instead.
