Just curious, anyone know what he is up to these days? Lars Holbeck was a mutual friend of ours.

I don't know for certain, but check in with Team Whipper (on the SPH site) and see if those guys climbed together at Jailhouse.

Eddie lives in Sonora with his significant other in a hill top house with views of the coast range to the west and Clark range to the east. He has a soundproof room where his drum equipment resides and, if I had the skill, I'd post a video of him RIPPING on his drums. When he was done, he handed his sticks to me and offered me a seat at his drum set. I politely declined knowing that I would cause his drum set to catch fire from the embarrassment of my pathetic drumming mediocrity. I always knew he was in to drumming but I had no idea he was so talented.

He had a heart attack 6 or 7 years ago while on a trip to Europe and this slowed him down some. He's still high-energy but has mellowed considerably.

Ed would have been a 5.15 climber today if he grew up in a gym like they all do. Many fond memories of Ed.

Ed Barry is the real deal and the 5.15 speculation is probably not an exaggeration. He onsighted 5.13 in the 80's. I remember shooting the sh#t with him one time about Valley ice climbs, specifically Widow's Tears and he said offhand, "yea, I've done that twice".

place holder here ...
e. barry was determined to return from our baja trip with a pair of huaraches. the cutest little senorita was working hard to gain credibility with him as size eight, nines and tens surrounded him in a (huge) leathery pile.
"eef thee right one too small, you poot in water ... eet will GROW! ... ya! no! reely!"
"eef thee left one too big, you poot in water ... eet will SHRINK! ... ya! no! reeely!
eddie was very skeptical. she was looking to us for help, puzzled as to why we were in hysterics. finally ed broke down and bought nines as help was brought in to reassemble the store.
and you know? ..... shee was right!
a true brother, i'll try to crank out a worthy effort during the wee hours. he tagged me with the sobriquet hooblie after all!

i'd been on the right route, it must have been the right day ...

it started with a casual inquiry. what'd you climb today? that's just an opener, like nice weather, eh? i answered meatgrinder.
i must not have been bleeding out or bandaged cuz right then the tumblers lined up, the key turned and a door opened.

right day because ed had had enough. contentiousness, snide condescension, and petty squabbling was not ed's wont and he was sick of it.
i was just a guy in the parking lot one day, the next we're ridin' tyrolean on a rope across the merced chasin' dale and vern enroute to cream.

ed was my entree to a realm but also a filter. his time in the valley accrued to my benefit because he had been navigating it for years,
so i owe to him my gratitude, not least for the long list of encounters with great folks. among the esteemed cadre lurked nary a clunker.

comportment was the ticket ahead. just fail to make a mess of it, while you're at it keep it cool and copacetic.
we were solid based on those terms and moved along skirting the scene where the sand got kicked.

he just wanted to make passage in pursuit of the state of the art for it's own pure reward so i stashed roper come meyers and danced to the call.

his was the best kind of mentorship because the demands were implicit. i was accorded respect by the full slate, and accompanying expectations.
there was no jiggering of leads as if i was the junior member and maybe i wasn't. (mentor forcefield right there!) colluded delusion has it's place.

what a privilege to be driven around in the rain and have obscurities pointed out with such enthusiasm. he did get explicit about context
and pointedly exuberant with respect due the players and the honor of the game. he wanted me to know. it would be sloppy not to know.

and indeed it was beautiful to watch that fluid expertise moving across thriller, midnight lighting back when few did,
and everything else for that matter. i hope all aspiring novitiates get a chance absorb such a sight.

humility? well, with those gifts and skills a course of study is in order, he's the head of the class

Last saw and climbed with Ed at the SF rock gym Mission Cliffs nearly 20 years ago. Still the low key positive personality that I remembered from Yosemite in the eighties. He was doing V7 and V8 boulder problems in that gym back then at the age of fifty.....tons of respect for being a cutting edge climber and all around good person.

Good drumming.

Ed is a real nice guy as I recall. Climbed with him a couple of times. He had all the time in the world for me.
