One day this spring I saw him walking around Ryan Campground then the next day I saw him walking down the hill toward Coyote Corner wearing the same clothes and pack like he never stopped walking.

I have had the fortune to meet Dick, and climb with him the 3 ventures that he made to Montana to play in the Boulder Batholith--unforgettable man, climber, and spirit :-)

One of the quotes ascribed to him on the JTRee Climbs profile - "The beauty of climbing is searching for the limit and finding there is none."

I will add that to the Quotations section in my t-shirt shop - such a great insight(including author, of course).

Hung out a little bit with Dick while I was hunkered down in Jtree this winter. He's obstinate, opinionated, always right, and will say anything just to see if you are actually participating in the conversation or just paying lip service. Quite the character, for sure, and a nice companion for those couple of rainy Sundays I walked around the park with him(and NO, in case anyone is thinking....)

When I first met Dick I thought his name "Dick Cilley" was another nick name that Russ made up, as Russ always assigned a nick name to everyone back then.

For a long time I wondered what his real name was ......

I picked up Dick hitching into the park last season. I had heard of him, and thought I'd ask for beta

me: Have you done Scary Monsters? I think I'll try it.

Dick: Scary monsters? *long pause* You'll neeeeeever do it.

(it turns out he was right)

Me: oh well. Do you want to go climbing?

Dick: With you? *long pause* Not really.

Some funny sh#t.

LMAO

BITD Dick did a fine job helping me out doing in-field sales.
He always paid C.O.D. cash and we moved a fair bit of gear.
Perhaps I never thanked him for that, we both make a couple
bucks, but anyway...Thanks Dick, I appreciated it.

Also, many of us in San Diego were a little bit cloistered regarding
the quality and viability of San Diego climbing - Dick Cilley validated
us, and told us the great things about our crags that even we - the
Locals - didn't recognize. And I appreciate that to this day.

Plus, there was a time, maybe in the mid 80's when the guy was
an absolutely phenominal boulderer...I mean he could crank
with the best of them, and did. Hey, for all I know, maybe he still
does???

Ran into Dick several times this last season. He remains motivated and like one of his quotes, is out exploring new stuff all the time. Always a good and interesting guy who says it straight.

He's gonna make a great dad someday. On second thought, he probably already is a dad. Just dosen't know it.

I adore the guy, he's an inspiration to all climbers. Strong as hell and incredibly dedicated to the sport.

Last time I saw him was about 2 months ago hitch hiking out of JT near Steve's Canyon. Picked him up and drove him down to his place in the pit.

Climbed with him some in Indian Cove this winter. He is expert at doing hard solo action. I think he's probably making his way up to Washington where he spends the summers. I think he owns Index at this point.

I remember him as a mostly adequate dishwasher (not that i haven't seen better - WAY better). Couldn't tell you if he could actually cook...probably not. I liked hanging out with him.
