Unlike years' past, the NC Hwy is still over month away from opening. Two dozers (D6 and 8 for you metalheads),one Kodiak blower, 2 front end loaders and a grader have made their way close to the 1st Cutthroat slide today. My prediction- May 27, unless the weather stays like it is right now (see below).

I talked to a friend who flew over the Cascades last weekend and said the mountains looked more like mid-January than mid/late-April.

Yup. But that hasn't stopped Supertopians from advising the guy who asked about climbing near Seattle this coming weekend to get on something at Washington Pass. Or the North Ridge of Stuart. Or various other alpine routes.

The Washington Pass highway wasn't completed until 1972. I wonder how people get their sorry butts up there before then? Ever heard of snowshoes?
"What is known today as the North Cascades Highway was originally the corridor used by local Native American tribes as a trading route from Washington's Eastern Plateau country to the Pacific Coast for more than 8,000 years. After the California Gold Rush of 1849, white settlers started to arrive in the North Cascades looking for gold as well as fur-bearing animals. " wiki

Snotel sites reporting up to a foot in most places west of the cascade crest as of 8:00PM. At this rate I'm leaning toward "plastered" myself. Cabin fever in May?

This might explain why the NC Hwy is taking so long to open this year. WSDOT is just now getting to the big slides under Liberty Bell which will probably take at least a couple of weeks to clear.

It is taking a long time to get anywhere. I still can't go north or east of my house without travelling 20 miles west first. The road into the winter route on St. Helens just opened up, and that parking lot is only at 2,800'.
We are building a parking lot for a crag at 4,800' this summer. I don't think it will happen in June as originally expected.

A new crag? Top-secret? If we promise to give you candy will you spill the beans?

It's official- Noon tomorrow. May 25th will be the 2nd latest opening since the highway was built in 1972. An above average snowpack followed with a string of seemingly endless late winter/early spring storms has kept the pass sketchy up to last week. Helicopter bombing finally got most of the "clingers" off Liberty Bell.

Getting sixteen and a half FEET of snow in March and April can put a crimp in things. I'm thinking alpine rock season will be a little late in the Cascades this summer.

Not a new crag - the lot is going in for Bulo Point. The USFS was going to decommission the road, and climbers got the USFS to agree to leave a portion open. Together we are constructing a small lot and turnaround near the access trail. This area is a nice day option with mostly short, moderate routes.
Construction should my husband busy while I am off on a climbing trip!!

I'm hoping the backcountry will still be in great shape in July since I'm missing June.
