Ok so its not my first attempt but I have never really had a night photo that I liked! I recently purchased a 7d and put it to the night test and am really happy with the results! These are my tests and so hopefully I can get out and start making something great!

Prezwoodz - I like em. What were your settings/exposure time and what post processing did you do?

I really like the first one but the railing posts are distracting.

I like the first one too and agree with Reilly that the posts are distracting (if you're up for a little friendly critique...?).
They are really bright and my eyes keep coming back to them when they aren't really the focus point of the shot right?
I do like the hazy white aura looking section.
Maybe punch the whole thing out a bit too...
Wondering if you set it to B+W what it would look like...?
Have fun exploring and do post more when you feel the urge:-)
Cheers,
DD

I did not mind the posts as first, but with those other folks whining about them, it drew my attention and yeah the foreground could be improved. My suggestion is move the tripod forward so it is against that yellow reflector. That puts the railing beneath the camera and out of view. The water with its reflections becomes the foreground. The dramatic distant shoreline with streaking headlights becomes the midground.
I have also been experimenting with night shots and am amazed at how much the camera can see at night. Love digital when you can look at the result and change the exposure till you like what you see on the monitor.

Wow is right! That top one almost looks like a painting, especially with the "distracting" posts in the foreground. For me, the blurred stars seem to distract my eyes from focusing on what is in sharp focus, the "posts," although a cool effect.

Hard to follow those first pics but since we're on the subject...
Always loved this one of Horsetail Falls in Yosemite. Apparently a phenomenom that occurs at a certain time of the year...

Thanks for all the great replies everyone! I'll keep them coming for sure. Tonight we went out and replaced some bolts on the Seward Highway, it was about 5 degrees out there and completely dark so i am trying to think about how to integrate that in some time in the future!
I am always up to some friendly critique.
Most of these shots are around 5 minute exposures. I used my 18-200 lens with my aperture set as low as I can get it which is only about 3.0. The ISO I had at 200 to minimize noise.
I shot them all in the wrong White balance so they were very yellow when I took the picture. I brought them into photoshop and used color balance adding blue and cyan to the photo. I then used a few Totally Rad Actions which helped bring the black and darker sky out without actually dimming the photo. After that a little unsharp mask helped keep the photo crisp. Whoops..there goes all my secrets! ;)
As for the pole in the first one I suppose with all the comments on it I will have to let out my other secret. I never left the car. I put my tripod up outside the car and snapped photos with my trigger that I had in the window. It was somewhere around 0 degrees out there so the warm car was a bonus. My girlfriend had her camera on the other side of the vehicle so I got the side with the poles! Next time I'll set the shot up better knowing now that the camera does such a great job!
Thanks Pate for the linking!

I love the posts! They give the photo a sense of reality and provide a stable border for the sky and the water.
They are still objects in a spinning, active world and give excelent contrast to the shot.
Can you acheive the same results with a shorter exposure? I think the stars would look cool that way too.
Here is one of my latest efforts, shot under a full moon but still pushing the limits of my rebel xt body and the stock 18-55mm lens. Shot at 800 iso, with a 30 second exposure.. Damn I need some new gear!
