In the "SS Chain, Shackle, Hanger Tests" thread I posted a sort of mini trip report but didn't say where I went. So here are the puzzlers

#1) I had to walk about 17 miles from the nearest trailhead and that narrows it down to a pretty small piece of California. The trailhead is about 12 miles away from where I was as the crow flies. Look for a feature that is about 1.5 miles wide, 1200 feet high and shaped like a loaf of sourdough bread. The panorama shows the south face.

#2) This is one I don't know the answer to but is related. What is the farthest you can get from a road in California? I would consider this place, wherever it is, to be the most remote point in California.

california is a big place this could be lots of places. it reminds me of the godard canyon, le conte divide, white divide area. but it could also be north in the emigrant wilderness, or south in kern canyon.

Goddard Canyon is remote and a longer hike in. Part of the Canyon is 12 miles as the crow flies from the roads at Florence Lake and South Lake but the boat on Florence means that it is closer to motor transport than where I was.

banquy, buddy, don't be putting us through another one of these:

http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1251439/Unclimbed-big-wall-in-northern-california

that's a low-angle crowned ridge, probably hundreds like it in the sierra. every time i hike a mile from a sierra trailhead my mind is filled with "what if one of these were a half hour from where i live in l.a." i'm learning meditation routines to stop that.

Dingus, Big Arroyo is only 7 miles from Mineral King as the crow flies.

Tony, I saw the "Unclimbed-big-wall-in-northern-california" thread - pretty funny stuff. I hear Clint found plenty of poison oak and some bolts there. I described mine as "1.5 miles wide and 1200 feet high of almost steep enough choss not worth the 17 mile hike in."

Frumy, I was 12 miles from a road but you can get further from a road in California.

Santa Barbara Island, in California, is probably about 25 miles from the nearest road which would probably be over on the west end of Catalina. Oh, did you mean California mainland?

really. i drove a truck to muir ranch once. i don't think you really understand the dirt roads that go up the center of the sierras. i don't mean to be an ass but - there are roads almost everywhere. & i have driven most. there are ohv roads in places so remote. the rincon ohv road, the dusty ershim ohv road just to name two that cut deep into the sierras. & there are many more. you need to give better clues. he called florence lake a road. so i guessing the ocean counts as a road.

Frumy - Since I get to make up the rules, I'll measure remoteness by as the crow flies distance from a legal road on which a street legal four wheeled vehicle can travel. Basically 4wd roads. Or, legal motor boat rides on lakes and rivers. There are old roads and navigable waterways in wilderness areas but they don't count. I think that measured in this way, the most remote spot in California isn't far from where I was. I'm pretty sure the 12 miles limits this to one area of California but it is hard to be sure.

I won't include air transport since you can helicopter pretty much anywhere, even wilderness areas. If I remember right, when my dad was with USGS, they didn't "land" helicopters in wilderness areas but would sometimes step off from a low hover if they couldn't get permission to actually land.

Spider - I like the island answer but motor transport by boat means to me that this isn't the most remote.

I heard a stat that it is 24 miles from the nearest dirt road (including 4x).

No idea on the pic. Interesting though.

No guess yet, but it looks metamorphic and possibly layered with a sediment?

I will be watching this thread...

the most remote spot in California isn't far from where I was.

I always figured that the most remote spot in Ca is Blue Canyon, which runs into the Middle Fork of The Kings River upstream, east that is, of Tehipite Dome and across from the Gorge of Despair. I've never seen rock quite like that in there though, mostly it's beautiful monolithic granite.

Okay, I'm wrong, I made an error so I'll give the answer. But first:

Blue Canyon is about 10 miles from a road at Hoffman Mountain and less than 12 miles from Wishon Res.

There is a spot I located in northern Yosemite (NOYO?)called Macomb Ridge about 1.7 miles south of Tilden Lake that is 13 miles from the roads at Leavitt Lake, Mono Village, Harden Lake (White Wolf) and Hetch Hetchy Dam.

I was at a place called Sachse Monument. I thought I was 12 miles from a road but forgot to check Leavitt Lake so I admit now that I was only 9 miles from a road. I think Sachse is pronounced sack-see.

There are old roads there since there was some mining at one time. In fact the trail running along the south side of it is clearly an old road.

I worked out what I think is the most remote spot in Kings Canyon NP. Right now it looks like there is a spot near Tunemah Peak on the White Divide that is about 13.5 miles from South Lake, Wishon Reservoir and the Kings Canyon Road.

Possibly the most remote place in California.

Seems like I should have something better to do.
