Be careful out there. It's a long ride to the nearest hospital.

Please elaborate, It wasn't just for climbers. [though you'd never know]
A distraught friend had them pull a tick still squirming from him. Talk about soul salvation!
His or the tick's is still a matter for the Buddhists...

fairweater - No disrespect, but this isn't the first time you've mentioned this here. I do not think this is correct. As I mentioned in this thread:

Something like this was in the Yosemite Daily Report earlier this week:
http://www.mercedsunstar.com/2010/06/03/1445447/yosemite-seeks-bids-for-operation.html
Yosemite seeks bids for operation of urgent care clinic
Yosemite National Park is seeking proposals for operation of a medical clinic at Yosemite Valley. The park's current 15-year contract with Tenet Healthcare and Doctors Medical Center of Modesto will expire in December.
"Doctors Medical Center has been an excellent provider of medical service to Yosemite National Park, and has contributed in a very significant way to the health and well-being of Yosemite visitors and employees for well over a decade," said Marty Neilson, Yosemite's chief of business and revenue management, in a press release. "The existing contract will expire at the end of the year, and we look forward to receiving offers from medical providers who are interested in serving the continuing need for medical service in the park."
The prospectus is available online at http://www.npsconcessions.gov, and more information can be found at http://www.fbo.gov. For information, call project manager Darby Watson at (510) 817-1365.
A site visit to Yosemite's urgent care medical clinic and related employee housing will be offered on June 9 for potential bidders. For information on the site visit, call concessions specialist Kim Tucker at (209) 379-2698, or e-mail her at kim_tucker@nps.gov.

QITNL - No disrespect, but your information is a bit old (have you looked at a calendar lately? - it's September)

The last time you posted this, they had just put the contract out to bid. Not much in the news since then.
Perhaps you have inside information - is something held up in the bidding process? Did no other health care providers offer to pick up Tenet's contract?
I've never required their services, but I think it would be a shame if the Clinic were to close. The Valley is so crowded, I'd be very surprised if this was allowed to happen. Let's make sure we point fingers in the right direction and, if appropriate, target our reaction.

Do we have to go back to the leader must not fall again.
At least don't get hurt if you do fall.
It called climbing not falling. Right?

It's really quite simple.
It's Obama's fault.
It's because Obama is a Muslim.
It's because Obama is a Socialist.
It's because Obama is a fascist.
Good ol' Shrubby-boy would've never allowed this clinic to close.
Nope...he'd have figured out a way to offshore it to the highest bidder.
That's fairweather's Uh-merri-kuh!

apogee - I gather you're joking, but forgive me as I don't read the political threads here. I don't like them. The first time this came up, I was concerned but couldn't find any verification. If the clinic were to close, I think that could present a serious situation.
Politics may be part of the issue, but I'd think we'd want to drop the gloves and work to a solution. The health care industry is a mess, as we all know, and that may be a bigger part of the problem.
If there is any hint of truth to this, I promise to make a few meager calls myself to get some more information.
I fooken hate the tourons but I'm thinking not me or us, rather them.
PS: We did a tour with Iggy in '82 or so. He was a bigger mess than Weld_It and totally RAD.

The main problem with the health care system is that decades of price gouging has made medicine so crazy expensive here in the US that it's not financially possible to even have a clinic in the Valley much longer. It would be interesting to see how the money gets divided up, and if the gov gets a cut of the pie and so forth. Without any sort of clinic there, a lot of tourists are going to be in great peril considering how many seniors visit the place every year.

I work at the Medical Clinic in Yosemite.
This is the most recent publicized information as I know it:
1. The current contract to provide medical services is held by Tenet Healthcare. This contract expires as of Dec. 31, 2010.
2. NPS put out a request for contract in Spring / Summer - and that request did not result in any viable bids. Currently, there are no prospects for medical services after December 31, 2010.
3. There is a possibility that there would be bids if the Park Service can/will provide a subsidy to a contractor to provide medical clinic services. This is on the table as well as closing the clinic. If potential medical services and NPS cannot agree on a plan for subsidy, it is a very real possibility that the clinic will close December 31, 2010.

Thanks Susan, sounds like the procurement process will force a hand. Must be hard on all who count on employment there.

Largo has the right point - why is everything about our healthcare delivery system so expensive and why do costs continue to escalate at a rate far higher than inflation or anything else? And why wasn't cost reduction a central part of Obamacare? There are many who are fat and happy with the status quo.

As long as there is a market for health services in the Valley (millions of visitors) there will be a clinic.
Unless:
a. Incompetent management
b. Incompetently socialized healthcare (same thing)

That's too bad, even more so for your average elderly tourist than climber (face it, when we get messed up, it's usually going to take more than trip to the clinic to put us back together).
But Tenet are the same jokers that were involved in running Memorial in New Orleans and totally screwed them in the Katrina evacuation taking several days to get anyone from Dallas to N.O. to even try to evac the hospital. So if it means getting rid of Tenet, good riddance. Sounds like political blackmail to me, tring to squeeze the govt for some extra money, but who knows without seeing the financial numbers.
