I'm low on cash and don't want to fork out for hotels during ski season. I'd prefer just to go riding and then sleep in my car and use that extra money elsewhere. Anyone know a place where I won't get hassled near Kirkwood (prefer not to drive back to South Lake Tahoe). Email me or just post here...

Choose a spot where a bunch of other cars are parked overnight and park among the other cars. Curtains are mandatory. crack a window slightly so condensation build up wont give you away. parking lot attendents arn't nearly as bad as valley rangers, but still keep it kinda low profile.

You can sleep in your car in the parking lot. My buddys have done that a couple times. You can also go to "Animal House", which is the dorms for employees, with some beer and make friends. They are all broke kids living the dream for a winter and will hook you up with a couch pretty easily.

Good Luck,

They have an overnight lot for cars, vans, campers, etc. Ask the lot attendants.

For several years I had a season pass to Kirkwood and camped out in the parking lot every weekend. I haven't been there for a couple years but they always had a designated overnight lot where people were allowed to park, right in the resort. It used to be located near the farthest lift to the right if you were looking at the mountain from a distance. You could just call the resort and ask where it is or drive around and look for the overnight parking signs. It's a small lot near some service buildings and the staging area for the horse drawn sleighs during the holidays. For cheap entertainment, head to the employee housing and party with them in the evenings, its always a good time. If you don't have four wheel drive, park in the middle of the lot, otherwise snowplows will kinda box you in and make it hard to leave in the morning.

Met some snowboard bum who lived out of his car at Boreal Ski Resort parking lot. Around Jan. the car was completely buried and he had dug a tunnel to his snow cave. They didn't care except for the snow removal side.
So, I would say, just be careful your not in the way of snow removal equipment and you be fine.

get a sno-park pass and camp there. if you set up a tent, set it *well* back, or you'll get bombed by the giant snowblower.

or..

drive to markleeville. many fine places to pull over on the way, or drive to the road closure at Monitor Pass, sleep there, be prepared for snowmobiles to wake you up in the morning

At the bottom of this page, it says that you can camp in your vehicle. They limit RVs on busy weekends. If you vehicle fits in a regular spot, then it seems to be okay. Kirkwood rules. I hadn't heard of the 25 dollar fee before for RVs. I don't know if this applies to all overnight campers.

You could check Craigslist Reno/Ta Ho

Like this one.
Could be Heaven or Hell:

"$15 Need a place to stay??? 15/night until you find a place (Truckee)
Save some money, have some fun. If you want to couch surf a day or two, we need help with our rent. 15$ and you can stay the night on the couch, we have plenty of couches. Don't waste tons of money on shady hotel rooms, have TV and a kitchen. We request that you are respectful of the house and don't mind smoking, of any kind!
Call 401 742 6742 or 530 448 3303"

Heaven: a bunch of chicks with weed
Hell: a bunch of dudes with Marlboro's
Doh, I wonder what's behind door number three, better take the parking lot.

Harvey's for 56 a nite, or sleep in a stall curled up like a drunk.

Remember, a case of beer for the animal house will set you back 24 bucks up there.
Don't show up with PBR.

Yea, I spent the night at Kirkwood in my van just last weekend - and I've done it many times before. I've stayed in a number of different parking lots without problem but I've been told by the Kirkwood parking people that "officially" you are supposed to stay in the last upper lot all the way around the "U". And don't park by the edge of the lot, but in the middle so the plows can clean things up during the night. there is usually more than one dirtbag there. ha

And by the way, the bar at the bottom of lift 1 is open late and warm (and has a restroom). Bud's pizza place is pretty cool about people hanging out too. Better to spend 9 hours in a frozen vehicle than 13 hours in my book.

Of course its a tad colder at 8000' then at Lake Tahoe. I've also bivied there a few times to avoid the sub zero temps up on the mountain.

have fun

Any recent updates here? The Kirkwood website now says no camping in the parking lot, but I'm looking for a workable method with my kids next ski season... I can swallow the higher cost of season passes, but can't swallow paying for lodging throughout the season and don't want to rely on couch surfing to the point of wearing out welcomes.

Having these logistics worked out has made Badger Pass our home spot the last couple seasons, and may cause us to stay there (assuming Aramark doesn't screw up the old way of doing it).

This info is from 2013, but still applies I think.
I just got off the phone with the owner of the 7800' Club, David, at 209-258-8880. He was probably the most encouraging contact I have made so far. David informed me that it IS OK to overnight camp behind the Club, by paying $25 a night Sunday through Thursday, and $35 a night on Friday and Saturday.

He also said there was a $300 season pass being offered by a group of people who organized to have the lot plowed so they can camp there with 7800' owner's consent, and not paying a nightly fee. He is not sure the $300 pass is still available.

As you were told by Dave, overnight parking may be available in the High Sierra Campers Association's parking lot.

HSCA members have first priority. Guest campers are welcome if space is available.

Midweek will not ever be a problem.
Weekends can get busy.
Check in at the 7,800.
Please pick up after your dogs.

Oh the good ole' days of camping in the lot.

gumby will know more about this than most.

you can overnight self contained in the red lake peak snopark but not at roundtop snopark across the street or down at blue lakes. Blue lakes snopark would be ideal to camp, not sure why they don't allow it.

I've seen folks pop a tent down in the hole west of the roundtop snopark.

we used to drive to a cool spot near markleville, but now you can't camp there for some reason.

there are some legit spots in hope valley, but it gets snowed out in the winter most years.

I don't think are any good free alternatives in the area.

We park the bumblebeast in the blue lakes lot mucho. Totally allowed as far as I know. The problem is that you are on the wrong side of the pass on a powder day versus in the valley woken by bombs.
