Well now if we could get 8 different people to analyze this useless poll we could get 8 different useless opinions as to what it means.

The poll is very close to what I think the makeup of taco is.
Excellent way to point it out.

skipt,
I would tend to agree with you. I was surprised that there were as many declared GOP/conservatives as there were. I would have thought there would be much less.
It is also interesting to note that although the women do not tend to talk as much as the men (myself being somewhat of an exception) they are here on the forum in significant numbers.
The age grouping is what I suspected but here-to-fore could not say for certain.

I'll give my analysis free of charge.
It's scary how conservative a forum those one is!
You''d hink with the high percent of college grads (I think) there are here it would skew farther left.
From highway 5, already in progress.!

Jay,
You know it is interesting that the 40% considered themselves to be "independent" which I gather means they could go either way in any given election. The rest were pretty much evenly spit on the side of the left or the right.
8. Which of the following best describes your party affiliation
Republican/Conservative 27.8% (22)
Democrat/Liberal 29.1% (23)
Independent 43.0% (34)
Pretty much, then, it is the independents who are probably going to determine the outcome of the next election.

Here is another question I found interesting
5. Would you change your vote in 2009 if you could?
Yes 26.6% (21)
No 73.4% (58)
6 people skipped the question
Over 1/4 of the people would change their vote in retrospect. Of course, we don't know how those people voted in 2009 but it is food for thought, at very least.

What do you mean we don't know? You've got the data, tell us.
While you are at it tell us how many people voted for bush II and would change.

ryanb,
You cannot do a cross tab of the two questions - which is what you are asking for - with the free membership. That is the type of membership I signed up for. I would have to upgrade to the paid membership to provide the cross-tabulation you are requesting and it is just a tad expensive for something we are going to use just once. If I were going to do other surveys - say for my online courses, I would do so but the platform I use for teaching provides us with survey tools.
Ryan, if there were a genuine interest in this sort of thing, we could create a survey which would answer that question - without doing a cross tabulation - but we would have to structure the survey differently. If enough people want to find out that information, we could certainly do so and yes, it would be interesting.

I don't want to be a party-pooper or harsh anyone's mellow, but this poll does not necessarily tell us *anything* about the people of ST. The findings are not based on a probability sample and therefore is not necessarily generalizeable to the population of ST. It only tells us about those folks who were inclined to and who chose to participate in the survey. And those folks may or may not represent accurately ST participants.
That's all. But seriously, carry on and have fun with it.

Hi Crimp
I am aware of that - it is, at best, a convenience survey. It is not based on random selection of the participants. It is still interesting, none-the-less. It likely reflects the data by the persons who most actively participate and, in particular, who participated when the survey was active. Still it is interesting to look at the data.
Crimpie, one thing I believe we can conclude is that the women lurk in significant numbers.

Apart from local and a few state elections, no one in the US voted in 2009. There were very few elections for congress or the senate, and of course none for president.
I get it, it was a trick question, to see if anyone was paying attention.

It was a typo, MH, but given the responses, probably the intent was clear. Good pick-up on your part. No one else caught that.

Again - I don't want to imply it is not interesting or fun or anything like that.
And I also will say that we cannot conclude that women lurk in significant numbers at all. It may be that women were more inclined than men to participate and this is why the numbers looks like that. Or it could be that one woman participated a bunch of times and that is why the results look like that. Or it could be that by virtue of luck it perfectly represents the gender make-up of ST. Because it is a sample that folks self-select into, be can't really conclude anything. But one can have fun with it nonetheless.

One can not definitively conclude, HOWEVER, while I agree with you in theory, I would say the likelihood is that the women did not multiple submit. Even given a hypothesis that the women were more likely to submit than the men, we are still seeing greater absolute numbers (and reflected percentages) then we typically see from an actual posting perspective.
We have noted this trend once before on a particular thread which garnered a great deal of postings - I believe it was the picture thread. People were surprised by the numbers of women that actually frequent the forum.
While I would agree that we cannot definitively so conclude, I would say the evidence is strong that the women have a higher propensity to lurk then the men. The postings by the women may well (and likely does) under-represent their actual numbers on the forum.

Wrong again. Independent does not mean equadistant from either party. It means not aligning with either one. In my own case it means that Democratic party slipped way down to the right.

I don't know that college education is related to voting propensities. Is anyone aware of a study or other data which addresses this issue. My guess is that once you correct for absolute numbers, it is likely not a significant factor in voting patterns or at least not a predicable factor.
