Okay, not really. I recently came into the possession of the complete volumes of Desert Magazine from 1937 to it's end. There are lots of great articles in here and several from the Mendenhalls and their desert climbing exploits.

I dont have a scanner and am stuck with trying to take pictures of these articles from 1937-38.

These are not Ship Rock but simply articles about climbing that appeared in Desert Magazine over a 2 year period.

I am sorry for the poor quality, even if I had a scanner I dont think I would press the magazine flat for fear of damaging the paper or the binding. These issues are fairly rare and demand a pretty good price.

There are a few good articles in the 1937 binder about Everett Ruess that are pretty cool.

You can buy a low end Epson printer for around $100 that will work fine as a scanner for that treasure chest in the closet!!!!!!

The cost of the beer or wine you consume while scanning will far outweigh the initial outlay for the scanner.

So.............no excuses-let the scanning begin.

I'll look into that. If I can pull myself away from flipping through the pages of 50 plus years of this fine magazine.

No need for a scanner.

Here's the whole set already.

Fun article about Moab climbing here, on page 36. While the rest of the world was embracing new clean climbing ethic, Moab was stuck in its own time warp:

Crunch, great find!! That will come in handy. I have found some good bouldering and climbing areas from flipping thru Desert Magazine in years past. Thanks

Very cool Glen Dawson article on The Great White Throne ascent in 1938! I did a full interview with him along with Doug Robinson recently and didn't see that one in his notebooks!

Lynne,

My grandparents were longtime desert rats, loved the desert and traveled deserts by their old jeep all over the southwest and into Mexico and Central America. I remember as a child taking trips with them to Baja and the Gulf of California on several occasions as well as trips into the Mojave. As soon as I was old enough to drive I began exploring the deserts and mountains on my own. I grew up spending time in the Sierra Nevada and loved the mountains but as I grow older I have grown more fond of the desert, their is something about big wide open spaces. For mountains I enjoy above timberline, trees ruin a good view.

Anyway my grandparents gave me the entire edition of Desert Magazine or rather my grandmother, my grandfather died a few years ago and my grandmother gave me the collection last month. A very special gift.

Neebee and Lynne, God bless you.

Lynne,

Another inheritance I received was a large filing cabinet filled to the brim with maps, AAA maps from the 1930's through the 1970's as well as USGS topo maps from at least the 1940's maybe earlier. It has been a blast comparing more recent maps with these old maps finding old trails and roads as well as mining claims and other fun things to explore.

Batrock, incredible heritage. Wonderful people to take you on adventures that made you grow and expand as a human. No need to battle fear in these areas as you grew up like so many do.

Your folk taught you to enjoy knowing the unknown.

This is my life now....to discover and enjoy. Peace, Dude and Thanks so much for your Thread !!!!!!! lynnie
