So when we're not trying to find stuff to climb, we like to hunt for the lost tomb of Genghis Khan. We went to Mongolia this summer to do just that. We brought our climbing shoes just in case, but there was nothing to climb where we were. Well, except for the summit of the most sacred mountain in the "forbidden zone":

Anyway, National Geographic decided to include us in their list of adventurers of the year: http://adventure.nationalgeographic.com/2009/12/best-of-adventure/adventurers-of-the-year-list

Here's the article: http://adventure.nationalgeographic.com/2009/12/best-of-adventure/albert-lin

And here are the photos: http://adventure.nationalgeographic.com/2009/12/gallery/albert-lin-photography

But most importantly, go here to vote for us for Readers' Choice Adventurer of the Year: http://adventure.nationalgeographic.com/2009/12/best-of-adventure/readers-choice-award

You guys are serious players! Way to get out there Shipton style. I been watchin' yer TR's and vids for a while now and I check out pullharder every now and then. You guys work hard and it pays off. I thought you guys were just a bunch of low budge yahoos like me and my posse, but you look pretty pro out there in Mongolia. Shay, we actually met last year up in Tioga at Ellery lake one evening. I think you guys got shut down on Conness. Way to keep after the adventure. We adopted a little boy from Kazakhstan last year. We call him Ghengis cause he looks Mongolian. Did you see any kids who looked like this?

Hell of a place, Mongolia.

I was there last Summer with my girlfriend. She's been to all 4 corners of the world and back again, and Mongolia was a place where she hadn't visited. We found a guide (who turned out to be a lazy POS, but it all worked out) and a driver (awesome kid, gave him a bigger tip than our guide) and set out for 10 days across the country.

Some pictures here. It's shocking how much damn grass there is out there. It looks big in some of the pictures but they really don't do it any justice; it's possible to drive for days and days through country like that and feel like you haven't actually gone anywhere.

Also:

"It took 2 days of driving to get there"

From my experience, it takes 2 days of driving to get anywhere there. Often more, since there doesn't seem to be a single road sign in the whole f'ing country!

More pictures here and here.

The first pic made me think it was a Tarbuster Appreciation Thread.

Nice TR!

Always wanted to tick off Mongolia especially to dig dinosaurs.
Did get to hang with some of the Khan's descendents in Kirgistan and Tadzhikistan - next best thing plus there are mountains there. Fresh goat yogurt in a yurt at 10,000' makes you want to mount up and head west for some good pillageing.

Awesome... my dream is to live in Mongolia for a summer. It's where I want to go more than anywhere else in the world. I'm glad you had such a great adventure.

Thanks for the comments guys. It was a pretty amazing experience and I think we made a pretty good scientific dent.

Micronut, yeah that was me and Charles on Conness. We went up there and it looked like the N. Face of the Eiger with ice smears and snow falling periodically down the face. That picture of your boy with the medals is adorable!

I loved Mongolia and had a Blast there in December 2005. Was in the Dornod region for a bit with my buddy who does mineral exploration there. Very interesting area. Hope you dont mind if I add a few pics to your thread. Flew to the Dornod region and then drove back overland to UB by 4x4 in a 20 hour push navigating by the constellations and GPS.

I sure won't be winning any granola recognition for this trip. For me it was all about partying, guns, uranium, strippers, and dodging prostitutes pretending to be "English students". The night life in UlaanBatar is world class ...

Here's the "other" Mongolia not seen in National Geographic ....

Note the rather large pile or Uranium ore in the background, I threw away my shoes later.

This was the Russian sniper rifle I used on our spontaeous "Hunt" en route back to Ulaanbatar from Dornod

This is the prey, which I deliberately missed. It was easy to do so, firing a long rifle, from a Toyota Land Crusier at 50 mph. I am told the AK47 is a better weapon for this style of "hunting". Well I made the best of it anyway and succeeded in sparing this animals life.

Plenty of evidence of the Russian occupation to be found which lasted till 1989 I believe.

This is the magnificent Gobi Desert from the air

Here is a shot of a rather nice Yurt setup out in the Dornod region

Ulaan Batar is a strange place, but check out the sophisticated graffiti in front of the coal fired electrical plant which also supplies hot water as well as electricity to homes in the city. It would be easy to write a book about the place. It's so different there and very much a frontier land.

George Bush dropped by while I was in UlaanBatar, this was one of his support planes.

In UB there are people living in the sewers because its warm. I saw men coming and going from this manhole.
Looks like a full pot of coffee brewing down there ....

Fortunately I was not invited down for a coffee.

Fascinating, thanks.

Mongolia is beautiful. Although I have watched both shows several times I cannot recall there titles. One is about a boy coming of age/test, then wedding and inheriting a yak herd. I think it is called "Becoming a man in..." about the Gobi desert. The other, about a boy and his hunting hawk, in the Gobi desert.

Awesome photos, dropout. Well I think you are officially our enemy if you're with the mining companies ;)

Yeah Mongolia definitely pulls you in two directions. There is so much vast open amazingly beautiful countryside , but then there are occasional random piles of trash, abandoned russian military sites, smog and exhaust of UB. At one point half of us were sick puking our guts out, there was no running water, and the fuse box to our apartment spontaneously caught fire and sent noxious fumes throughout the place. That was interesting!

And yeah, you gotta watch your step, because you may step right into an open manhole. That'd be ugly.
