I need some examples of some public school gyms (we're a middle school, but high school or middle or even elementary will work).
We had high hopes of doing a roped wall, but might just go with a traverse wall. It's all engineered and signed off.
Unless I can find a public school out there with a roped wall?
Funny how people freak about safety now... when I was in high school our gym teacher used to make us climb up a rope to the gym rafters (30' high!) with nothing underneath us but a 1.5" pad and a hardwood floor. Anyway, thanks for any examples you can give. I need accurate school names and the state they're in so I can look them up on the internet. We have a meeting with the superintendent next week.

My son's elementary school put a wall up in the gym. It runs the width of the gym (about 40ft) and is about 7 feet tall. They hang crash pads over it so it cannot be used anytime. When they are climbing on it, they unhook the crash pads, toss them on the floor and let the kids have at it. I know another elementary school near us just put a wall in as well, but I haven't seen it.
San Carlos High in San Carlos, CA has had a climbing wall (area?) in it's gym since the 70's. My understanding is they sawed cracks in the wall! I do not know if they have expanded it.
Lick Wilmerding High in San Francisco has a wall on the outside of the building. You can see it from highway 280.
The city of Richland WA put a big artificial boulder (with holds) in the playground for kids. The city council members noticed a lot of adults using it so they put in another harder boulder for us big kids.

U.C. Davis has or at least had a wall in the rec center. It's a public university.

Like above, 7-8' high bouldering wall the length of the gym. The kids love it.

The public high school in Telluride has a roped climbing wall - open to public certain evening hours and a very active program for the students. The public school in Silverton also has a roped climing wall - but I am not sure if it is still in use. I think there are more in Colorado.

I teach in Santa Clarita, California. I help run an after school rock climbing club at one of the middle schools in our district. Nicros built a climbing wall there in 1999. It is about 30' tall and has 5 ropes. View more by searching "La Mesa" at the Nicros website

Way back in 1993, I was a student in a French high school in Bordeaux, and they had a climbing wall!

I may be wrong, but I thought Sonora, CA had a high school with a climbing wall? maybe they were just using Class 5's wall. Sorry, I don't have more info, this was gleaned in a conversation a long time ago from a guy that taught climbing there.

Orinda Intermediate School (Orinda, CA) has a traversing wall in their gym. However, my son said that the PE teacher there isn't in to climbing so it just stays covered up all the time.

Right now we have standardized 9' high traversing walls for elementary and middle schools. With regards to high schools, I have done RFP's for roped walls and can give you an example of that if you PM me. We came up with a very basic scope and the wall companies submitted designs based upon the scope. What has your engineer signed off on if you don't have a plan yet? We ran into a lot of trouble getting taller walls into E.S. and middle schools, not just because of liability but also because of cirriculum. Also, I'm not sure about your state regs but talk to your engineer to see if a 3rd party inspection is required. I've got a ton of info that can help you with what you are trying to accomplish but I can't turn over specific designs. Also, I'm not sure what your job is but you may want to check with your procurement department or your construction management department as they may alreay have standards.

Yucca Valley High School has a roped wall on the north side of their gym.
I heard they offer an entire course on rock climbing technique as well as safety techniques, which is kinda cool cuz they are like 15 minutes away from J Tree

wow, awesome! I have a lot to digest! Thank you everyone so much for all the grea links and info.
Our plan was to just bolt the holds into the reinforced concrete filled cinder block wall up to a belay bar. The engineer signed off on the wedge anchors and holds and method of attachment. You'd think it'd be easy, right? DSA is a pain. This has taken 5 years already. The word "climbing" still scares everyone. But football is no big deal? I'll look at all this and put together a presentation for the super and cross my fingers! I may be in touch with some of you. Gracias again! - Tom
